you still don't make that sort of jump regardless...and it was not driving wind and rain - i had several buddies run it and you can look at the photos and see it wasn't...http://www.marathonfoto.com/Catalog/List/257497208?PIN=J9E250&LastName=COOK AND

it was raining some and windy but not what you are making it out to be.
i ran it in 2015 and it was miserably cold and windy, and everyone who ran it in 2015 and 2016 said 2016 was much worse. riley ran like 2:25 after blowing up at chicago going for an OTQ and has a 3:42 1500 pr so i don't think his stats need any padding.

3:42 1500m means absolutely nothing when talking about the marathon. Assuming he did blow up in Chicago I'd give him 2:21-22 at best.

What's a 3:42 1500 got to do with a marathon?

This had me dying...zero fvcks given! I agree.
I have to chime in here because you can't come down on this guy enough. The worst. Worst. What is with the face? Why the ridiculous emoji face? Better yet, who the F made this popular? Just when we ridded the world of duckface last decade, a whole new generation of posers come along without the lessons learned of narcissism. FFS, seriously.
Corey Reese is everything bad about ultra runners. Thank god less of these assclowns are doing marathons now, because marathons are not CRAZY enough to get into RW or reposted on instagram anymore. Go away.

So I would roughly expect the following conversion between St. George and an honest sea-level course assuming you are able to properly deal with downhill/altitude:
3:10 -> 3:00
2:30 -> 2:25
2:15 -> 2:13
2:10 lucky to hold his own on the St. George course. Case in point, Paul Cummings, 2:11 marathoner could only run 2:15 in St. George, and from what I heard he did not enjoy the experience due to the downhill beating.
Great analysis and I like your theory about resilience to pounding (mama jokes aside).
The 3 hour+ marathoners also make a big deal about the pounding their legs take on the downhill, but I think this is their tactic to discredit anyone who says it's an EASY course. It's not reality, sore legs from soft gradient downhill running is waaaaaaay overrated.

Corey Reese is the hobby jogger of all hobby joggers. If the term is ever put in the dictionary, it should have a photo of him.
I ran for an hour and a half on my elliptical. It said I went over a 30 miles. Can I count that as my pr or do I have to have an asterisk next to it?
You do realize you elitist nobodies are a very very small part of the running community. The majority of runners could not even relate to your awe inspiring 1630 5k even if you did know how to write a book.
I can just tell you, I live in a very flat sea level area. So flat the only hills are the overpasses. I tried to ride elevators up and run stairs down to get ready- but that doesn't work so well.
I'm about 5 mins off of a BQ on our "local" flat course. Twice I've travelled to St George for this marathon. I know these three things:
1. St. George is, without question, the most scenic course I've ever ran. Seriously you start in the dark and 6-8 miles in the sun comes up and it's just an other-wordly red sandstone. If you've never seen this part of the country (and I hadn't), it's something to go see.
2. The race was incredibly well organized. They bus like 7,000 runners to the start. Aid station people are nicest people ever, like so nice it's weird- twilight zone like (high school kids, smiling grandpas, etc) Tons of pace groups, stations are loaded, huge exhibition, etc.
3. I ran nowhere near my recent PRs. like 8 mins slower once and 17 mins slower the other. And the next day I physically could not walk down stairs. Thrashed is an absolute understatement- and I've finished 2 full Ironmans. I think it's about mile 22-23 or so when you head into town down a steep incline that I cried.
If you trained to race downhill it probably would be fast, but if you are a lowlander and flatlander, do not head to St George thinking you are going to kill it. And you may lose your breakfast bar on Veyo Hill- I did.

Collin you lost credibility after you tried to claim that Phoenix Marathon is a slower course than Chicago due to the altitude adjustment. There is absolute NO altitude impact for a race that starts at a little over 2000 feet in elevation.
Aside from the 3 minutes that Jack Daniels assigns to it, yes, anonymous internet person.

I've seen Riley run a lot over the years. He's finally back from super serious injury that knocked him out of running for something like a full year pretty recently. He's run a few marathons before and always had to take bathroom breaks and wasn't able to get it rolling again after stopping. Without having talked to him about this one, I suspect that he put things together. That guy is an absolute monster when he's running at his potential. I wouldn't bet against him making a 2:17 on a fair course prior to the next trials.

What's a 3:42 1500 got to do with a marathon?
What does a 3:28 1500 have to do with WR setting potential at longer distances?

it doesn't (necessarily). i made that comment because someone mentioned padding stats or PRs, and 3:42 is no joke.

A runner I know ran it this year and on Strava called it the STG Marathon. Is that a common nickname or just a trick so people didn't realize it was the downhill St George course?
He also listed that it was a PR in the Strava title.
