My warm up has always been to run the last mile backwards and then turn around and finish my warm up to the finish.
isn't it hard to see the course markings?

This happened to my teammate in the freshman race of a dual meet. I was the second placer who ended up winning, first time I ever beat him. He ended up becoming a pothead under the bleachers and I qualified for state. He got lots of action from the hottest girls though. I never got past second base
In a school XC race how close to the single white line or blue flags does one need to be considered on or off the course? Certain number of feet? Arms length? Doesn't matter as long as you go around the red and yellow turn flags?
Thanks.

It happens often.
It is the athletes responsibility to know the course which is the reason there is a reason XC races allow you to walk the route before the race. If you think you are going to be a potential leader you definitely should be walking the course.
Lesson learned..............
what about in marathons? I know in Ottawa ontario, canada a few years back about half the elite men marathoners took the wrong turn on the course early in the race and a lot of them who finished in 2:07 or 2:08 got disqualified at the end after all that running.
It's almost impossible to know the entire route in your mind in some marathons that have so many turns.
You can't focus on running and having to worry about what intersection is coming up and which way to run for 26 miles.

My coworkers and family were all in attendance and I have nothing to show for what would have been a certain victory - FYI This was Tunnels to Towers in NYC - How often does this happen? Is it my fault for not knowing the course well enough? For race directors out there, what do you do in these situations? (I was DQ and not included in the results or awards) I'm not going to ask for a refund on entry fees cause its for a good cause - Just frustrated and wondering if this has happened to others?!
Tunnels to Towers isn't really about who wins the race ...
