Arguably one of the best tests for whether a medication is performance-enhancing is to count how many athletes are TUEing it.

70% of the British swimming team are on asthma medication, can't imagine there are too many things in an indoor controlled environment that are going to trigger an attack! Compared with 4% of the population.

i don't know what the deal with exercise induced asthma is but it's fairly recent discovery and the disproportionate number of elite endurance athletes who seem to have it compared to the general population seems odd to me.

No, it's not that recent. It has just been better understood. Elite endurance athletes exert themselves more. and have to do so in increasing levels of lower quality air. Or they get spoiled by training in pristine conditions and racing in smog. Nothing odd about it at all

Exercise induced asthma is caused by training. Not normal everyday life. Having it allows you access to a medication that helps you perform better that is not readily available to other. How is this not the exact definition of a PED?

Someone decided it was ok for athletes to use asthma medication to cover their genetic deficiencies but not something like EPO.

You have trouble breathing when you run to hard? Tough luck, not everyone has the genetic makeup to be an elite athlete.

You don't see odd. I do. Elite athletes have been exerting themselves for a long time but only in the PED era do so many of them need medical help.

A lot of these athletes need to get their story straight, is it asthma they have had since childhood or is it exercise induced asthma caused by years of training, the story changes to suit the situation day by day, week by week.

As for 70% of the GB swimming team being asthmatic, if you don't see that as odd then you need to step away from the crack pipe.

A lot of you clowns have no clue. Supraphysiologic dose of salbutamol has a tremendous performance enhancing effect.

Go and have 6 puffs 15 minutes prior to a 5km time trial and then come back to this message board and try to say it doesn't benefit those without asthma. The mechanism is not understood but enough studies have shown a big increase in muscle contraction force.

Exercise induced asthma is something that happens when its VERY cold out. It is not something that would affect athletes in competition.

I had a couple of spells in my youth. Being breathless for minutes after a race is normal. Actually wheezing and feeling your airways are congested is NOT. It's damned scary. I carried a Ventolin those seasons for safety.

On the days when it happened I most definitely did not race at my best. So it does affect athletes in competition.

That article says most of them didn't know they had it, and that professionals would disagree over whether it was really asthma. It does not say that 70% are on medication.

I think another key point is there is there is a big difference between a rescue inhaler taken after a race in a dangerous race and something taken before a race that helps performance. What most here have a problem with is the later.

The PED era has been around since the concept of athletics was introduced and the same proportion of people doped back then. Maybe even more because there was no testing.

Your head is in the sand or an even darker place if you think there was some sort of pristine era.

You just did not have so many athletes running off to doctors for thyroid meds and inhalers 30 or so years ago. Of course there were always PEDs but it seems much more systematized since there's been money and agents (who I think are the root of most evil) in the sport.

That's right but they ran off for other things. Naturally the more we understand and the more that becomes available will drive the dope industry but it's just more of the same.

Everything is more systemized unless you think everything stands still for your borderline luddite ways.

Who ran off for other things? What other things? If I thought everything stands still I wouldn't think that doping is more prevalent now than it was 30 plus years ago. I have no idea what your point is here.
