Why have I never seen any of these athletes have an issue with their asthma? The people I know who have asthma are affected on a day to day basis, the only elite I've ever seen pull out of an event due to asthma issues was Haille. Why did we not see numerous problems at the Beijing Olympics? One of the most polluted cities in the world and still we saw asthmatics excelling, the medication must be truly amazing.
The meds *are* amazing! Most people don't realize that in US, gold standard asthma treatment is *NOT* bronchodilators like Ventolin/Salbutamol, it's inhaled anti-inflammatory steroid. It dampens the inflammation that is related to asthma attacks, similar to how steroid cream dampens eczema inflammation. If their dosage is correct, day to day these people appear fine but...attacks often occur during sleep when airways are resting, by environmental triggers (pollens, virus etc) and after intense exercise. Ventolin is only supposed to be used "as-needed" because you can develop steroid resistance, though a lot of athletes puff before a race just in case. In US, on avg 9 people die per day from asthma, in UK it's 3 people so i can understand taking this stuff "just in case".
Can you build muscle from these steroids? Not a chance, different pathway, and the dosage is micrograms (millionths of a gram) compared to body builder dosages which are massive and injected into bloodstream or oral, not inhaled. Many modern asthma meds are inactive pro-drugs that don't activate until they hit epithelial tissues, and also have very high first pass removal by the kidneys.
