In the 2003 Footlocker National Championship, Matthew Withrow beat Olympic distance runner Galen Rupp. Where is the man that beat a a 3 time olympic runner, bronze and silver medalist, ten time USATF champion?

He failed to develop like Rupp.
I ran in IL as a high schooler in the 90s, and I was super curious to see where Withrow would end up. I thought for sure he was equally as good as Sage and Torres, and maybe better. At the time, I thought he was a bigger story than Rupp.
Obviously not everyone is capable of continuing on at such a top level for a variety of reasons. Still, I am curious.
I'm guessing that while I bagged my second Olympic medal, he was sitting at home fondling his Footlocker trophy, totally DEVASTATED
He ran a shit ton of miles in high school. Didn't have the ceiling that someone like Rupp did but got everything out of his talent. No shame in that. Illinois running legend.

Withrow did not beat a 3 time olympic runner. He beat a highschooler.

IIRC he also ran 13:35 for 5k as a freshman as Wisco before it all hit the fan.
In the words of Sam Malone, he had a "groin injury...g-g-groin injury".
I remember when he qualified and ran at the World Cross Country Championships in college as a TRUE FRESHMAN. Dude was a stud and even though I'm sure he felt short of his own expectations, he still had a career than most of us would dream over.

? - Matt was an NCAA Div 1 all American with the Badgers for four straight years...one of only a handful of runners to ever do so...injuries were his nemesis
He had a great collegiate career although he was probably disappointed. He struggled with injuries. Last year he spoke at a high school.

Easy girls. I don't blame anyone for NOT using the search function on this site. Quite frankly, it sucks and never yields useful results. Search generally or search specifically...it still doesn't work. Just easier to start a new thread.

I know everyone has a love-fest for Schumacher, but talk about over managing a young athlete! He should never have redshirted a season when he ran 13:36 for 5k. Let him try to win an NCAA track title instead of getting ready for cross country year-round! Needed to have gone to a school where he would've gotten more individualized attention.
Injuries.
To say Withrow exceeded his talent at a young age because he ran so many miles young is foolish. He barely raced after turning 20 years old simply because he couldn't get to a starting line healthy.
He is a manager at Applebee's.

Ha! Typical lazy response. Yes, the search function on LRC is a mess, but in 60sec, clicking 2-3 of the "what happened to Withrow" threads from the first two pages of results, you'll get a clear picture of what happened to him from HS till now.
The short answer today is that he's married and has been working on the sales side of things with a running brand.
