I think it\\\'s the 5th or 6th city to back out. Seems the world is finally waking up to the fact of what a corrupt and useless endeavor the Olympics has become...will be wonderful if the IOC is left with no possible host city for 2024.

The Olmypics are a bloated mess. They should just stick to T&F, swimming and gymnastics. And even most events in those sports should be dropped.

I have no problem with the number of events. My complaints have to do with the massive amount of spending and absolute drain on local economies, athletes getting zero or next to zero, and the IOC meanwhile raking in a fortune. It's just disgusting to watch knowing where all of the money is headed and, more importantly, where it's not.
Rome had no shot. LA and Paris are the clear front runners. No reason to hold out hope (and spend money) when there is no chance of winning the bid.
Why not do it in Raqqa or Mosul?
Muslims deserve to hold the Olympics as well.

Agreed, those are some local economies that deserve the IOC's full support.
The IOC is going to have a serious problem on their hands in the near future and their proposals to date are flawed.
Countries are backing out from hosting the games because of the significant financial strain that hosting these games causes to the economy. What used to be a drawn out fight between 5-6 countries, who were narrowed down from say 20 proposals, is now going to be between Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris.
The list for 2028 is also going to likely be narrowed down to countries where the leader has the authority to do whatever he wants. Russia, Qatar, etc... The growing trend internationally when it comes to countries hosting referendums is to say "NO".

I think the IOC is aware of this problem. However, their solution does not seem to be a great fix. That solution was to allow countries and areas to "split" the games. But thus far, you do not see that kind of cooperation happening. Yes, it could happen in the future.
having a permanent site is the only answer. that would eliminate the corruption of the bidding process at least.
3 remaining bidders are Budapest, Paris, and LA. Its probably going to go to Paris if the French want it as it should. LA is miserably hot in the summer and doesn't have the history Paris does.

That's not a problem the one's making decisions want to solve.

I doubt if you've ever been anywhere truly miserable in the summer months if you think warm temperatures and low humidity make it unbearable. LA will seem a treat after the sauna that is Tokyo at the end of July.
People have been living in the area of Los Angeles for over 5000 years. It has more than its fair share of history.

Are you kidding?
IOC members make a boatload of money from the Olympics. The money comes over the table and under the table. They would never dream of reducing the size of the Olympics.

Why is that wonderful? To any fan at all of athletics, that has to be one of the most ridiculous statements I've heard in quite some time.
Well - the times are going to have to change.
Less countries are bidding on the games and with the decreased demand will come decreased offerings to the IOC.
OMG really. That leaves poor Budapest, besieged Paris, and weird L.A. Neither Paris nor Budapest have anything built. L.A. built a light rail system, has a new NFL stadium, new Soccer stadium, and new T&F being built today, and is the center of the old media and social media universe. We\'ll see who bribes the best ;-(
LA is not miserable in the summer. It gets cool air off the cold pacific. The humidity is nothing like Atlanta and other cities in the summer. It's hosted the games twice before in the summer. Joanie nailed the first ever women's marathon in LA.
The reasons cities pull out of contention varies. Some realize they don't have a shot this time around and why waste more money pursuing it. Political leaders change. Rome just elected an anti-Olympics Mayor in May. No surprise their bid ended. The bidding process always starts with a bunch of cities and gradually narrows to a short list of true contenders. That's happened for years.

Intl athletics at that level are all about corruption and bribes. You have to accommodate (read: pay expenses for) 20,000 senior citizens of the various national federations under the IOC. Recall the IAAF 2006 World Cup at Carson was cancelled because SCUSATF could not find a sponsor to fund 5,000 IAAF senior citizens. That's a tragic example of how international sports sees their role in the world.
Rome may be pulling out of the Olympics, but I sure wouldn't pull out of her.

As a fan of athletics how can I support an organization that does nothing for sport except profit from it? I am not necessarily anti-Olympics but I am absolutely anti-IOC in its current form. I think it's ridiculous for any fan of athletics to not express major skepticism about the organization!

It will also be 12 years since the Olympics were in Europe, but only 8 since they were in the Americas.
