You all crack me up trying to over analyze his HS training when you have almost no facts to back up. Here is what i saw first hand from McDonald. Watched him run a 3k in the Iowa State classic indoor meet as a true freshman. I'm pretty sure he lit up the track the last 600 and won the race. It was obvious to everyone in the building that he is a special talent. Overhead Martin Smith refer to him as a superstar. Watch him run and you will see the potential. This kid passes the eye test.
Who cares? Another kid who had everything going for him and runs for an elite program. It's amazing how many people make such a big deal about this stuff when doesn't really matter.
Hey guys how are you all ?
My name is Dejen Gebreselassie from Ethiopia and moved to Australia in 2004
I started running at age 12 i didnt take athletics serious until 2013
In 2013 from Hobart I moved to Sydney to train with Sean Williams training groups
When I joined the boys they were one of the best athletes and nicest people out there the boys were Ben St Lawrence Australian 10,000m record holder 27:24 Hurry summers 10km PB of 28:16 Track and Young talent Morgan was also training with us
I trained for 6 months with the boys and we followed Sean Williams training program
Ben St Lawrence Hurry summers and myself were doing quite high mileage
For Benny was between 140 - 160km a week
For Hurry summers was between 150 - 50170km
And for me same as hurry 150 - 170km a week double runs everyday from Monday to Sat except Sunday one big long run of 30km or 2hrs of running between 4:00 4:10 km pace
Now I tell you about Morgan's Mileage
Mileage Morgan followers the same training program as us except does less mileage between 100 - 120km his long run is 25km in 1hr 45
This is how my weekly mileage looks maybe you should have a look and find out this is the current training program I am following of Sean Williams
4th week
M - am 10km 42:30 pm 10km 45:11
T - am 10km 43:00 pm 7 X 4mins Fast at 2:59 pace 2min jog 12km 40'44.9
W - am 21k 1:28:50 pm 9km 40:00
T - am 3x3min 3x2min 3x1min (3,2,1) float rec at 3:30 pace test all at 2:40 total 10km 32:17 (3:13) avg pm 10km 42min
F - am 16km 1hr 09 pm 10km 41min
S - am 8km hard 24:15 pm 10km 45:0
S - am 2hr 20 33km easy
sometimes it's 25km at 3:40 - 3:30 pace long continues progressive run
So Morgan doesn't do doubles just single runs and Sunday 25km easy
I hope you enjoyed reading this I like Morgan he is one of my good mates he is very talente kid he will go far no doubt about that

Is this percentage based on heart rate or race pace (5000 m)?
Can confirm, trained with DJ... 2013 was a good year for the group. Like I said, Morgan wasn't quite running high mileage but 100kms OR 60mpw seems about right. 40MPW may have been the quality mileage he ran, as some have suggested.
Ive been part of the nsw running scene now for 15 years. I can vouch for Dejen.
His strava is available here -
Dejen is really putting in the hard yards i recon he'll be doing some really big pbs soon!
Love it Dejen, gotta shut those americans up! They all just talk shit, want everyone to be doing 100+ miles a week or they are somehow less of a runner. But 99.99% of them arent doing this young kids times in late high school.
Anyone under ben st lawrences group is amazing plain and simple!

Hey, you guys tore it up in Rio!
I raced against a guy at our state track meet that ran, as a senior, 1:52 for 800 and 4:13 for the mile running 25ish miles a week with 2 or 3 days off a week
He must have been hiding in the Centennial park bushes while everyone else was running if he only ran 40 mpw on the Williams program.
Williams is a Lydiard devotee, albeit a muddled follower. Maybe McDonald averaged 40mpw if you count from the day he was born until 14:07.
Impressive natural talent.

That's a shockingly bad conversion, might wanna up the mileage, a lot!
Lol i was there watching him race a several times (in GPS athletics carnival when he ran a 8:30 3K). Very impressive, great running form as well. Killed everyone in the field and he won the race by like 30 seconds.
Cheers thank you mate :)
whats your name ? sorry just wanna remember if i knew you
Yes Bennys training and his boys is all simple and plain
I hope you guys are training well too
say hi to benny and all of the awesome people there
see you soon
Anyone here from Randwick Botany Harriers?!
Thanks for that original post. Good to know there are still people here who know a thing or two. In that vein, I have to ask if you know if Summers is still running in Vibrams like he was a while back?

How recent? I ran almost identical times off of that mileage.
My training would be:
Monday: Hard intervals (usually 200s)
Tuesday: Short fartlek (100m on 100m off for a mile X 2) Mile would usually be 5:00-5:10
Wednesday: Hard intervals (400 or 800 repeats)
Thursday: 3 mile run at 7:00 pace
Friday: off
Saturday: Either race or take the day off
Sunday: off
This training wasn't the best, my team hadn't had sub 2:00 guy since the '90s. Somehow it clicked for me though and I ran those times lol
