Or is it BECAUSE he has been injured so much that he's still able to go strong (not burned out).

Rupp would do well to get injured right now.
I don't think it is ironic. The others actually had at least 1 significant defining race. Ritz hasn't yet so he can't retire yet. Makes sense.
Ironic in the sense that he graduated in 2001?

American Record in the 5000m would seem to be a defining race/performance, wouldn't it?
Who were the big 4?
Ritz, Web, Hall and ?
A little too ironic...
Runners who magically avoid injury are much more ironic. Rupp. Farah. Rowbury. Centro. They all have something in common? But what is the magic sauce?

The fourth was Webb. The other Web was never heard of again.

Did you happen to miss Centro did have a stress issue at all. Won a gold medal he did.

"stress reaction"
stress reaction > In dentistry, the pressure of the upper teeth against the lower.
Also, a state of physiological or psychological strain caused by adverse stimuli, physical, mental, or emotional, internal or external.

I wasn't asking for a definition, Webster. Just implying that he didn't really have a stress reaction. Just needed to lay low for a little while to avoid some testing like at the Prefontaine Classic that he and Rupp happened to miss this year.
The explanation was for the guy you responded to.
I agree that Centro never had a physical stress reaction--bone or muscle. Just an excuse to avoid running in real meets.

I am not sure what this means.
Can you have more than one defining race?
Ritz running 12:56 to break Kennedy's American Record was pretty significant.
His Bronze in the half marathon championship was pretty good too.
His 10,000m PR was a 6th place finish in the Wold Championship. Nothing to sneeze at.
9th in the Olympic marathon, certainly significant
I'd say his running is defined by being very good at different distances and running well for a long time.
But that 5000 AR is his defining race, to me.
He wasn't supposed to be the guy that got that record.
