Does Joe Gray ever run track races? He's so dominant in the mountain and trail racing scene, but how does he compare to the rest of the competition when he races the more popular events? Did he ever run NYC or the Olympic Trials or a track 10k?
Not trying to detract from any of his accomplishments, just asking a legitimate question. I never see any road races or track races on his Instagram.

Roads races on Instagram? Not terribly exciting. The greatest exploits are in the mountains man. He did run the Olympic Trials '16. Not sure if he ran them in 2012, but I think he was more focused on marathons back then. Wait, no I think he's always been a trail/mountain guy. Wish he'd get up in distance, but his mountain running serves him well as a versatile racer. He won USATF Club nations in Bend Oregon a few years back. Was a decent steepler at OSU.
NYC, gross.
He ran a 28:30 solo in a B heat of one of the college meets (Stanford?) a few years back. Think he ran 2:18 at Boston.
Also has run somewhere in the low 60s (maybe 62-63) for half marathon. Not world class, but for not focusing on those distances running 28:30 is pretty darn good.
He's like everybody else that comes to the realization they will never be world class at distance running or otherwise meet their distance running goals so they find something close to soothe their wounded ego and or pick up $50 and a trophy. I've got friends who hit their ceilings as runners and took up ultras and multisport events. I'm not impressed. My grandmother could "run" 50 miles if you give her long enough or finish a triathlon if you find her a 42cm bike frame and xxxs wet suit. I'm just not impressed. You know what sports people care even LESS about than your typical distance running events? Knock off events like ultra's, tri's and mountain running. Up next: ultra mountain triathlons. wtf

Says the guy who'd probably get chicked in a mountain/ultra/trail event.
https://media.giphy.com/media/AXQaLoWMeSmRy/giphy.gifOf course you do realize don't you that the sport of running is 99 Mickey Mouse events and the 100m.
Go ahead and post your PRs on track and road as compared to Gray. Let's see how impressed everyone is with you. I really don't understand this mentality. Do you think that someone who finds they are very good at distance running should switch to sprinting because more people watch sprinting even though they would lose all the time? Why not find the thing you are best at and do it to the best of your ability? Any running World Championship is more accessible to a deeper talent pool than almost any other sport in the world. This site is full of people who have low self esteem and hate anyone who performs better than them, especially if they are recognized for it. It is really pitiful.

Plus bonus: you get to climb mountains. Who doesn't enjoy that? I'll take a mountain run over a road run any day of the week.
He didn't impress you? He'll be crushed. Couldn't you have broken it to him more gently?
Is he related to johnny gray
He found a way to make running a career. He's sponsored, and earns a lot more than $50 for winning those races. Respect.
Joe was 6th in the 1600, 7th in the 3200 (9:33) at 2002 3A state meet (WA). He was 9th in XC.

Your grandma could also run 5000m on a track or the NYC Marathon if given enough time. Does that make those endeavors not worthwhile either?

So tell us your running accomplishments that are so much more impressive. Is everyone that cannot be a world class distance runner supposed to just pack it in and become a couch potato?
It sounds like Gray is doing something he enjoys, he gets to travel to cool places, and win a little money once in a while. More power to him. What else do you think he should be doing that is so much more worthwhile?
Just because some can't run sub-13 it doesn't mean they should give up all competitive and challenging activity. I have a lot more respect for someone who goes out and gives it their all in any sport then someone who just walks away because they can't be "world class".
Congratulations to Joseph Gray! Too bad for the Ugandan dq'd. These kinds of events have a lot of dq's. I saw the name Philip Rocha in the junior results, was up pretty close to the leaders and faded. Is that the very fast SoCal runner who came close to the Mt Sac xc record? If so, good for him to take the opportunity to race in Bulgaria at a very different event.

Same guy. Another CU recruit, Eduardo Herrera (5th at NXN last year) was the 3rd U.S. finisher.
