Karl is on track to finish around midnight tonight - if so, he breaks the record by about 12 hours.
I believe he needs to finish before 1:07 PM Sunday to break the record.
Karl for President!

Is the Red Bull thing out of whack? It indicates about 26 hours left to get the record, but 138 miles to go.
the red bull site has lagged behind realtime - although it's getting closer now.
whiteblaze board is closer to realtime:

So is he on track or not?
As of one hour ago he has 28 hours to cover the last 70 miles to tie/beat the record.
He can either push through the night like a zombie and average 24' mile pace or sleep 4 hours and average 20' mile pace
He'll probably attempt option one no sleep but slumber accidentally and become awakened by concerned crew and forced to drink a pallet of red bull and break the record by 10 minutes and have chronic fatigue syndrome for 2 years and shellshocked for ten days, still living out of truck eating cold canned foods and not talking to people, avoiding eye contact.
Go Karl!

That would be 9:08 this morning which would be 1 day 3 hours 59 min left. Lets just call it 28 hours left. 70 miles out from Springer is Dicks Creek (mi 69.6). With no sleep Karl will have to keep a 2.5 mph pace to tie the record. With 4 hours sleep tonight he'll have to keep a 2.91 mph to tie the record.
This is a tough last 70 miles. Might be close to breaking it or falling short.
There's a full moon tonight but it will be cloudy.

If the White Blaze board time is based upon EST, there is a post saying he was at Unicoi Gap at 2:28pm. That would leave him 23 hours for just over 50 miles to get the record.
If he gets the record, I am officially changing his nickname to "AT SpeedG.O.A.T."
Someone saw him 18 miles from the end a couple hours ago. He should be wrapping up the FKT with an 85 mile "day" as an exclamation mark. Bonkers.
I'm disgusted that so many here are following an ultra-run. This needs to stop now.

Piss off, and take your unneeded hyphen with you.
What Jennifer Pharr Davis did looks more and more impressive as these so-called elite ultra walkers have to struggle so much to barely exceed what she did.
Has any of these AT runners ever been attacked by a bear, and if not, why not? It is the perfect opportunity for bears to interfere in a race.

Fancy that.

Or it looks more and more suspect.
Finished and got the record.
Karl Meltzer just set a new Appalachian Trail thru-hike speed record! 2,190 miles. 45 Days. 22 Hours. 38 Minutes

What's most exciting about this is that somewhere in Oregon, you just KNOW Edward Cheserek is fuming about this and plotting his own FKT attempt. Your move, Cheserek.
