When trying to set a FKT on the Appalachian Trail, terrain obviously comes into it also. Someone with more experience will have to chime in, but in my opinion a mixed strategy of walking the uphills and jogging some of the flats and mild downhills will probably be the best in the end.
Yeah and then there's the sections where you have to actually scramble over rocks, or pull your body weight up ledges or lower yourself down over ledges. But for the most part 95% can be hiked or ran. In few select country areas you could actually run a 8-9 minute pace for 25 miles at a time. Even with a full 20 lb backpack you could also hit 10-12 min pace on some of the 3+ mile long downhills if you're good with poles. The thing you have to also notice is the climbs for the most part do not have switchbacks so a 20-30% grade for a mile is common.
