Unreal: Centro shows up late and doesn't get to throw first pitch at Orioles game, then admits he's a Yankees fan

So I was watching the game last night and saw on twitter that Centro was at the game with his gold medal.

I thought to myself, "That's cool, but it kind of sucks they didn't mention him on the broadcast or have him throw out the first pitch." Last week, when I was watching the Orioles play the Nationals in DC on tv, they had Katie Ledecky up in the booth for a full inning, she threw out the first pitch, etc.

So this morning I'm reading the sports page in the Baltimore Sun and see a big photo of Centro under the caption "Fast in Rio, slow in Balitmore". The blurb mentions that Centro was scheduled to throw out the first pitch but got "stuck in traffic" and thus had to settle for being recognized between innings.

I then looked to see if the story was online. It's not but a similar one is as shown here:

As an Os fan, I was going to demand an immediate apology but am trying to calm down a little bit out of respect for the gold he won in Rio. If I'm going to be honest, I have acknowledge when I first moved here I rooted for the Texas Rangers over the Os (now I do not) and when Centro was growing up the Orioles were awful (they had a losing record every year from the time he was 8 to 22).

But showing up late for the first pitch? Should I forgive him for that transgression?

I mean if he showed up on time, maybe he could have chatted with the guys about how to pull off the huge upset as the underdog. Instead, they are slowly falling out of playoff contention.

I neer suggested Centro lied about being struck in traffic. I never said he was being a jerk for saying he's a Yankees fan. In fact, I said that similarly had town allegiances when I first arrived here myself. All I did was ask as an Orioles fan if I should forgive him for being a Yankees fan and for missing the first pitch. I was complimenting him by thinking a pep talk to the guys might help them play better.

The whole post was supposed tongue in cheek as an orioles fan.

Pissed? I've known your dad for years. He coached many of my best friends. If I was compiling a list of Americans I'd most like to see win, youd be near the top of the list.

Do I think he did it on purpose? No. Traffic between DC and Baltimore, can take 1 to 3 hours. I personally refuse to make the drive between 3:30 and 6:30.

But have you ever heard of someone who was supposed to throw out a first pitch at a game getting stuck in traffic and not being able to make it? I haven't. So i thought it was a funny story and posted about it. It's basically a once in a lifetime opportunity that he missed out on.

And the yankees thing is understandable because of his parents. I mean I'm a Cowboys fan. Like the Yankees, basically everything about that organization is disgusting except for the fact it's the team I grew up with . I guess I'd like it if my non-existent child supported my team as well.

My wife wanted to call me out at the Os playoff game in 2012 for only being a pseudo fan. In the wildcard game, I rooted for texas. The orioles won and then I went to the Os-Yankees series, bought seats and rooted for the Os.
