A 400m runner has and uses far more "type 1" muscle than a marathoner. More muscle needs more blood both to provide and remove gases.
EPO is effective at middle distance and 400. It is pointless to use EPO in a steady-state long distance event like marathon, except in training to prevent anemia. It does work in long-distance events that alternate long rest periods with short bursts of intense effort, like cycling and skiing.

BTW, "microdosing" is very misleading, when you bring up your T/E ratio from 1:1 to 3.999:1 (masking with epitestosterone would allow for even more T doping).
Likewise, one could use EPO to increase Hb from 14.2 to 16.2 g/dl and get away with it, as for example Paula's 2012 case showed, i.e. by a whopping 14%. More is possible, if one optimizes altitude/EPO/blood doping to decrease the reticulocytes - irrelevant for performance, but decreasing the off-score and thus not triggering a blood passport investigation.
Not very micro. I also wouldn't call that grey zone, but controlled or limited doping because of the use of forbidden, performance enhancing drugs. Virtually all cyclist did that, when the Hct limit was put to 50%.

In the Olympics, it was casual 5:00 miles for a ways, until Kipchoge put the hammer down. Sort of like going up a HC incline in cycling? I'd also think skiing is closer to marathon than cycling in energy usage profile.

Absolutely shocking to reread the BALCO stuff and to realize that everyone was doped to the gills and almost no one ever tested positive unless they went too far - like Ben Johnson with his yellow eyes and ridiculous muscle gain. Clearly there was/is either massive fraud, terrible testing, and the occasional sacrifice who goes too far and has to be made an example of for "cleaning up the sport."
