Just cause he isn't as fast as you doesn't mean you have to leave him in the dust! Just slow down and enjoy it or if you're really obsessive about your runs then go on one earlier and go on one with him! People act like each run must be fast or else it will be useless. Which is idiotic.

I hope he's a former college runner who drops your ass as you try to impress him with a "hard" 6:30 mile. I've gone on casual date runs with girls (who didn't know my running background) who tried to push the pace to impress me, I'm like wtf are you doing.
OP, I can guarantee you I'm way faster than you and I have no problem doing 9-minute miles with someone I'm interested in, so get over yourself.

This is the thing about running. There is such a wide range in abilities and someone who just hears that "you're a runner" assumes that running is universal even though "runner" could mean running every day or running once or twice a week.
Well that settles it then. I'm not sure what answer you're expecting from the forum, because you've already decided that if it's not a good enough workout you don't want to risk the run. So don't. Or lighten up and meet for the run on your easy day. It won't kill you to run a minute over your usual recovery pace if he's not some uberserious hobbiest like you.

I know you're a runner and from your post basically autistic, but think a little. Think of averages. Look at runners on the street/trails. Presumably the run will be at something from 6-9 minutes/mile, most likely around 8.
If the possibility of a slow run is a problem for you, don't run as a date with someone who's speed you don't know, genius. As another example, the possibility of conversing with a moron is unacceptable to me, so I would not go on a date during which you could talk much.
Anyway, a real man would have specified the date himself, not given three options (??!), so you already know he's a loser. Have fun!

I went on a "run date" once with a woman who sounds just like you. Had to be a "real" run. Was terrible. She loved herself almost as much as she loved "her running", and it was a toss up whether her personality or running was worse. She sure was serious about her running and I heard a lot about her "Boston". It was pretty clear during the run that she was put out that it was easy for me, but in the end I had to block both her number and email. Partly my fault as I just ignored her after that run rather than replying and telling her I had no desire to see her again - but she was just so awful I honestly didn't feel like she deserved even another 30 seconds of my time to reply to her. During the run I felt like I was being held hostage by this horrible horrible person and I just wanted it to end so bad - I got through it by promising myself once it was over I'd never have to talk to her again. So I kept the promise to myself.
So - if your running is so important that you can't do a fun jog with someone - don't date. Not even for a coffee. Stay single forever and spare someone the pain of having to spend time with you. Just stick to your all important running and belief in yourself as a runner. Get a cat.
