But they won't, because they're all total retards.

The athlete is there.
The interviewer has the news.
How does he not tell him right then?
You tell him before the interview starts. Its the only DECENT thing to do.
+1
Then give him an opportunity to decide whether he wants to do the interview then or maybe later. Those guys are jerks and should be banned from covering important competitions in future. Such news are heart-breaking and wasn't just for Chelimo but also for his fans including his dad, mom, brothers and sisters back in Kenya. It could have a very devastating effect.
more let's run stupidity. Clearly Lewis Johnson was told during the interview. He had to bring it to Chelimo.
I hate to break it to y'all but sports are live and things happen live. Is the interview just supposed to ignore the news? This is the big leagues not some local rag trying to make sure they please the local coach.
I swear, you guys just want to coddle athletes and just sniff jocks.
I agree that it was f'd up to do it live. Chelimo thinks he's getting interviewed about his Olympic silver medal and then is told by some random dude that he's DQ'd. Poor dude kept himself from dropping f-bombs live on TV at least twice. Chelimo looked like he wanted to cry. What a sh---y way to feel right after the best rest of his life. Should have been an official that told him.

NBC is your enemy.
Yes, Lewis Johnson was prickish. Hope he retires with Tom Hammond, but there's no chance of that.
You could really see Chelimo's head snap backwards when hit with the news. I half expected him to start yelling "Bull s**t!" into the TV microphone , several times.
However, I think he hurt is case by talking too much. If I understand what he was saying, which is questionable I admit, he was basically saying that he got boxed and admitted that he thought he had the right to defend his outside space so he could get out of that box.
Uh, wrong. If you get boxed, it becomes your problem. You have to wait for an opening somehow, or create one in a manner other than shoving people who are simply running to your right side.
He should have clammed up and let the U.S. coaches do the protesting and appealing. I am actually surprised that he was reinstated after admitting that he fought his way out of a box.

Lewis is a classy guy, former Track Athlete, and rabbit in Europe.
He was in a screwy no-win situation. He's got a producer in his earpiece telling him the news and telling him what to tell the athlete...
I'm sure all is forgiven now.

I get your point, Over 3 blues, but it is standard operating practice for sports sideline reporters to avoid making their subjects uncomfortable. I don't remember any of the NFL sideline reporters asking a coach as he walked to the locker room for halftime, "Coach, your team really sucked in the first half, and those plays you called were the stupidest move I've ever seen. What do you have to say about that?
See, they don't. But they did to Paul Chelimo, an American success story.

WHAT in the heck is classy about Lewis Johnson? Just because he ran a little track at a little college in Ohio (Cincinnati) does not make him "classy." 8th place in the NCAA 800 does not automatically make you a good person.
He is nothing but a typical TV flunky, disposable talent controlled by the producers, and I wish they would dispose of him.

What the heck
It's not a crappy thing to do. They're saving him from embarrassment. Why didn't officials go straight to him to give him the word? He was reinstated anyway. How 'bout those teens from Ethiopia? lol
So you're the type of person that tells people their family member died in front of a large crowd instead of removing them from a situation that is obviously going to make them overly emotional in front of a group of people. They should just get over it, right, they need to find the news out as soon as possible?
You know how embarrassing that was with the US flag draped over his shoulders during the pinnacle of his sport's lifetime?
Sport stars don't need to be coddled but NBC shouldn't be trying to hype up the drama factor like an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
These are grown men. No one died. It's just sports. What do you want the reporter to do? The reporter just found out, he's supposed ignore the issue to save an athlete some embarrassment? NBC was well within their rights to inform the runner of the DQ. I'm glad it was overturned, at least for Chelimo. Too bad for the 4x100M.

Why'd they do it? Because they could.

Clearly, he kicked your arse in some race. Or life.
It's been stated a few times what many people thought should be done. They specifically cut to him to tell him he's been dq'd on live tv. They knew before they cut to him. They set him up for that. They may be grown men. But they deserve the respect that it takes to accept or decline a live tv interview of being told you were just dq'd in front of all the viewers for NBC. Like most people, he thought he was going to be asked about how it felt to win the silver medal after around a 14 second pr.
“They should have told me [before] and told me what was happening,†Chelimo said. “I can’t say for them, I don’t know what happened [and whether they knew before the interview started] but I was just disappointed. It’s really sad for me because I heard it from a TV guy, a TV interview…I thought it was a joke. I thought he was joking.â€

“That was the most heartbreaking thing in my life. It’s really something I couldn’t even wrap it up in my mind. Going back in history, I’ve never seen a 5k where [people were getting DQ’d [like that].â€

I agree that NBC could have managed this better. Maybe they could have told him off the air, but unfortunately bad news sells better than good news. I hope NBC comes back and interviews Chelimo before the end of the game. He deserves it.
Really disappointed but not surprised with NBC and c**p coverage. They did the same to 4 x 100 guys. If they're yakking in his earpiece all Lewis had to do was ignore it and tell NBC he couldn't hear them. That would've been classy!
