I am sure this has been debated on this forum before and I have seen the issue mentioned in many of the threads, so I figure I?d start a separate thread dedicated to the age of African runners.
There is no question that runners from Africa are the best long distance runners in the world. However, I really question many of their so called ?junior? athletes. I have seen many Kenyan ?juniors? them in person and they don?t look their age. It?s not like just one or two of them look like they might be over 20, it is more like 90% that look older than the age on their birth certificate.
I have been told that Kenya is still not keeping track of birth dates the same way many industrialized countries are. They don?t even associate a birth date with a year; they use events as a time factor. For example, they might say that someone was born the summer the draught killed half the cattle, or that someone was born the same year the village burned. When these people develop into great runners they will go to get the birth certificate from the local government, and the track federation has a strong pull in this process. The athletes are assigned a birth date, which in many cases is totally arbitrary.
I am no way trying to be derogatory about Kenya or its citizens, but I do recognize that that many things that are very formal in my country are not treated the same way in other countries.
I am also very much in support of foreign athletes coming to school in the US (I was one myself), but it is not fair to compete against someone that is a freshman at age 25 (I was 18).
