French protest.
Editor's note: We have an article up now blasting the decision by the French to protest and for the IAAF for upholding the protest:

Please tell me this is not true?
I found a pic on Twitter of his foot on the line, but no context to wether he was cut off or pushed at all, he is off balance though so idk

Dammit why the hell do they write kerb? F*cking morans.
In English, 'curb' means to reduce/hold back or restrain something.
A 'kerb' is the edge of a road, or the inside of a running track.
Just for your interest.

That picture you have up is not the infraction.
CBC has the whole race up and it looked he did not land in the water for the 2nd waterjump and landed on the side instead...which i think is a more worthy of a DQ

Did he get pushed? The picture posted here definitely looks like he's getting jostled.
This is pretty stupid. And I agree with another poster: WHY IS THERE NOT A RAIL HERE?!?!?!?! Stop with the stupid cones. This is the Olympics!

for those who can watch (at 2:38:43 of video or ~2:20 of the race)

Can't believe Kemboi would disrespect the spirit of competition like this. The track lines are drawn for A REASON !
Hard to find any competitors who follow the actual rules these days.

What a burn to LetsRun posting the wrong photo and going off on a tirade not knowing the issue

Right here? Looks like he's in the water, quality isn't great on the NBC player though.

If that's not the infraction then why the hell did Rojo put the photo up? Shouldn't he have found out exactly what happend before putting up the article?

If that picture posted is the infraction, i agree it would be weak but to me...infraction seems like its about 2 seconds before that...but i could be wrong too
Not so sure wrote:

hmm, from that picture it does look like he's in...but hard to tell. Ideally we would have a straight on shot of that jump.
I do suspect there is something more than that stepping on the line pic for Mekhissi to be so sure that Kemboi would get DQ'd
I don't see any infraction there, they should protest his dq if this is what they are dqing him on there's no evidence there

On the one hand, the rules are the rulesOn the other, it clearly didn't matter here
The rules actually address this.
163. 4. An athlete shall not be disqualified if he ...
(b) steps or runs outside his lane in the straight, any straight part of the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump or outside the outer line of his lane on the bend, with no material advantage thereby being gained and no other athlete being jostled or obstructed so as to impede his progress
There is a NOTE on what "material advantage" means, for instance getting out of a boxed-in position.
However, I don't think "material advantage" is the same as "making a difference" in the end results (for instance, get 3rd by 5 seconds, but only gained 1 second by cheating -- that's still a "material advantage").
I think the argument would be that he stepped in right when it starts to be a ruve and isn't straight although it's really close if you look at the photo.
Also I've udpated the article with the IAAF statemetn as well as with a picture of Mekhissi's 3 fingers up at the finish. What an ass.
