You guys are all missing the point - he didn't file a protest. A protest can only be filed on an impedance. This isn't the 2995m steeple minus one water, it's the 3000m steeple. Maybe if he actually took the barrier he would have been gased just a bit more at the finish, allowing Mekhissi to catch him outright. But we'll never know that because he never ran the full race. The race has 7 water jumps. You don't think skipping one would affect your performance?
I didn't see him skip a water jump. I thought he just cut the corner a bit on the way to the water. Of course, if he was DQ'd by the judges and not via protest from the french camp then no reason to blame the frenchie.
When gets up on the podium for his corrupt medal, the Rio mascot needs to sucker-punch him.
Kemboi still had the wildcard for next years Worlds. Hope this makes him decide to unretire and kick ass.

The crowds in Rio will boo him.
Well, they'll boo Jager and Kipruto too because that's what they do.

Exactly.
Long hurdlers are regularly disqualified for not getting their trailing leg over a hurdle. Even if the time so gained could not have changed the outcome of the race. How is this different?

How is Jager's silver tarnished?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm indifferent about Kemboi. I just thoroughly dislike Mekhissi.
That's too bad. Mekhissi is a jerk and I was happy to see him out of the medals. He pushed a teenage girl after a race once. Not a good person.
Race video doesn't quite get it on the rewind of NBC. On start of the third lap (second pass of the water jump) Kemboi swings to the inside and surges to pass a few, including Mekhissi. He keeps up the surge on the inside past the water passing runners and as they curve back around it looks like he starts to step to the inside of the cones, but that's where the feed cuts away.
Looks like Kemboi could make the argument that he got pushed to the inside, but I'm sure they considered that. Pretty unfortunate for that to happen with one of the most experienced runners out there. Mekhissi was right behind him when it happened and him being him immediately called it out after the race.
In spite of everything Mekhissi has done in the past though you can't blame him one bit. If there's one thing we know about athlete sponsorship contracts, they reduce and inflate based on the results of major championships. Huge bonus for him to get bronze over 4th.

To everyone who says it doesn't matter because the French guy was so far back: How do you know that the French dude didn't see him cheat, see the official's red flag go up and then just back off know he could out sprint the chasers for third?
That just makes the french guy an idiot.

He doesn't even have to win, just deny M-B a medal!
Well I cannot see what you guys are talking about from the NBC feed. 2nd WJ seemed normal to Kemboi. He was the right side of those orange cones. Anyway, assuming I missed an infraction, bearing in mind that it made no difference to the outcome I call this the worst type of bad sprtsmanship. Kemboi should appeal.

No, you're right. Kemboi is such a sportsman. He definitely deserves a medal.

After re-watching the race I agree with the DQ, but it still sucks and I feel like the Frenchie sat for 4th knowing he would get a medal. It is almost like he figured he wouldn't win, so he might as well run good enough for fourth because he saw the flag go up, and that just seems like poor sportsmanship.
But Kemboi does pass like 6 people on that water jump inside the lane.
Contrary to his fans on this board, kemboi is not the second coming of christ. unless he can walk on water, he definitely landed on solid ground off that barrier.

I watched it carefully just now. Kemboi definitely lands on the track-level edge right next to the water on the second water jump.
I think the relevant event is at about 2:20 to 2:23 into the race. I found it really hard to see if he landed out of the water or not when rewatching it multiple times. It also looks like maybe he stepped on the line as they left the water jump and went back onto the track, but again, it is hard to see for sure.
Why didn't they just install a rail? Even D3 colleges have a rail through the steeple chase section. Having no rail in an olympic final is just asking for trouble. It is much easier for an accidental lane violation to happen with cones than a rail. This meet is being run by a bunch of amateurs.

I made a claim about Mekhissi, not about Kemboi.
Nice try though.

I don't even want to see Kemboi race for a medal. Just sit right on Mekissi the whole race then outkick and taunt him the entire last half lap. Maybe take his shirt off over the last barrier and wave it in his face.

Agreed. The DQ makes sense, but Mekhissi benabbad has to be the biggest A-hole on the track, and the fact that he was clearly cool with with sneaking in on a technicality is lame.
