Regardless, I don't think she could have done better. As was said, she couldn't drop most of the field running 4:00 and she would have been toast on the last lap. People say she should have done a long drive to the finish, and that's exactly what she attempted. Dibaba went with 750 to go and Muir covered the move because that's probably when she had been planning to make her own move. Unfortunately, it was way too fast and both she and Dibaba died (although she died much worse). Only thing she could have done was hang back a bit more on the third lap, but she went for the win and it didn't work out.
I don't agree that everyone's goal should just be to medal. Muir probably thought she could win, and she went for it. She failed. It happens. But I applaud the effort, just like many people applaud Pre for trying to become Olympic champion rather than holding back for third place.
Tom Osborn went for two, Pre went for it and died, and so did Muir. It makes sports great.
