The Mak from N Africa has now, moved ahead of Seb Coe as having the best combined 800 and 1500m time.
His combined total of 311.36 seconds is just ahead of Coe's 311.50 seconds.
I knew he had a 1:42 in him, called it last year. Brilliant run. Great to see the 800/1500 type winning Olympic medals again.
Makhloufi, new all time 800/1500 king.

Coe clean? As he's proven over the last few years, he's one of the biggest slime balls ever in athletics. The dude is a farce. -
Kiprop's 800/1500 times are 309.84 seconds. He's the greatest of all time by a WIDE margin.
800: 1:43.15
1500: 3:26.69
Total: 309.84 seconds -

That may be the case using time, but of course a second difference over 800m is worth a lot more than 1 sec over 1500m.
The best way to do it is using IAAF points for each mark. Using that system Makhloufi now moves up to 3rd on the best combined 800/1500 list behind Coe and Kiprop, who both have 2523 points based on last table of points (from 2014).
Makhloufi now has 2510, ahead of Baala in 4th (2491) and Cram (2489) in 5th and Souleiman (2487) in 6th.
Coe - 1:41.73 (1275) + 3:29.77 (1248) = 2523
Kiprop - 1:43.15 (1231) + 3:26.69 (1292) = 2523
Makhloufi - 1:42.61 (1247) + 3:28.75 (1263) = 2510
You should also take into consideration that Coe's and Cram's performances were set 30+ years ago, when the competition wasn't as in depth and tracks were certainly not as fast as the latest mondo tracks they have now. -

Ok new title, Makh is the first man sub 1:43 and sub 3:29.
Ahead of Cram if I remember correctly -

True - but Kiprop has also not spent nearly the same amount of time focusing in on the 800. I imagine he at least has a 1:42 in him in a fast race. But you have only run what you have run. So for now its tied. -

eh ??
what competition did Asbel need to run 3'26+ or the Big-Man a brace of 1'41-flats or a 1'40.9 completely solo ???
as for speed of tracks, what part of the long-time 65% coefficient of restitution limit for iaaf legit tracks do you not comprehend ???
do you understand what the coefficient of restitution is supposed to represent for speed of tracks ??? -
Why add 800 & 1500 times? That gives too much weight to 1500 times since they're twice as long. Kiprop would almost certainly have a faster time. Either average 400m pace for 800 and 1500 PBs or 800 PB multiplied by 1500 PB would be a better mark. Coe's number might still be the best.

Letsrun, why do you continue to allow this man to post here?
Ads nothing to the board and can't be civil... -

Noah Ngeny is the real #1.
3:43.40 mile
2:11.96 1000
He went through 800m in 1:44.xx in his 1000m world record, so we know his 800 PR of 1:44.49 is nonsense. -

your late to the show
i already stated maloofi was 1st
1'42+ / 3'28+
guy ~ 12 hours ago on another thread
maloofi albeit probably "morally" deserves combined points record as his 800pb was in biggest race of a quadrennial & inevitably "tactical"
this was tactical, but unlike 99% of them, it started off at suicidal pace with no paid pacer in field, but still "tactical" when position only important, not clocking
anyhows, Asbel, if he'd bothered to chase the clock in '14 race when he smashed nijel in 1'43.3 when he ran ~ 7m extra on bends & eased off at the end woud have buried the points total
the whole vid of '14-paris meet had it early on, but the 2 hour vid has now gone
Asbel was in ~ 1'42-flat that day if he'd run flat-out, ideal split, route- race
he was only a 3'28+ guy that year... -

very true
as mentioned many times before, guys don't always run paced, targeted 800/1k/1500/1 mile in career, such as snell who ran mostly 880y/mile & sneaked in a 1k WR but never bothered much with 1500, always chasing mile instead of 1500 so never got the 4
similarly with Ryun who had 880y which tied 800m ( no timer at 800m !!!??? but accepted in iaaf lists & progression book as tying 800wr ), 1500 & mile record
unfortunately Ryun never ran a 1k at his season peak in either '66 or '67 for the quadrennial ( 1 k means sh!t today, it probably meant less than sh!t in '60s ! )
similarly, noah had no interest in 800 despite incredible ability & had run a 2'12.6 early in '99 & probably felt he had some unfinished business with 1k, so after running 3'29.1 in brussels for win on the friday, ~ 44 hours later on sunday afternoon in rieti, he ran 1k instead of 800 or 1500 & went 2'11.9 off terrible pacing/start
from another thread :
http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=7595623&page=1
you do realise that coe ran his 2'12.1 off a 51.3, noah his 2'11.9 off a 49.9 !!!
that 49.9 included an utterly ludicrous ~ 6m extra wide on 1st bend !!!, meaning his 1st lap was probably more like 49-low in a 1k !!!
( go look how quickly coe gets tight into lane 1 in his last 1k wr & how long before noah does in his
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIZT-htcplQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvUH3X0Wv2c )
noah was probably in 1'41-flat/low shape in rieti & couda made a real run at 800wr that day if he'd chosen to do so
& may i add he had a 3'29.1 win in his legs from ~ 44 hours before !!! -
Another way to do it is to look at where the athletes rank on the respective AT lists between the 2 events. If you break it down that way this is what you come up with:
ATHLETE: TOTAL RANK (800 RANK, 1500 RANK)
Makhloufi: 24 (17, 7)
Coe: 30 (T3, 27)
Kiprop: 46 (T43, 3)
Cram: 54 (29, T25)
Baala: 55 (T43, 12)
Souleiman: 57 (T34, 23)
William Chirchir: 70 (T54, 16)
Amine Laalou: 71 (49, 22)
Kaki: 95 (6, T89)
William Tanui: 96 (T51, 45)
Nobody else is under 100 when you add up the rankings between the 2 events. Interesting on that list that only 2 guys (coe and kaki) are higher up on the 800m list than the 1500m.
