It was a tough break but shouldn't have this been Molly or Emily running in this race? I still don't understand why they both chose not to double.

Just watched the replay, I'd be shocked if something wasn't torn. Looked awful.
How far into the race did this happen? Is there a link we can view?Any possibility at all that she can run on it?

Probably shouldn't run as that knee probably needs surgery.
Would she / they have protested like they did if she was incapable of running?

Thanks. How far into the race was it? Hope she didn't make it worse by running on it. Three days to recover--if it's not torn maybe she can run, although I'm not sure what's to be gained beyond more praise for her Olympic spirit.
Right around 3200m.

Did you see how her knee buckled inward? That knee definitely needs surgery.
It looked like an MCL, hard to say if ACL. She may be able to perform ok on it if it is just the MCL. It looked like the contact was initiated when Abbey's foot caught the other athlete's foot from behind. Very unfortunate.

I watched the clip about 20 times and it looks to me like the NZL runner just ate it on her own after catching the rail.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm afraid that Abbey might have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Anxious to hear an update from Mark Coogan on Twitter (or elsewhere). Hopefully, she is still healthy enough to run the final Friday.
We have a story up here with photos.
It will be updated with more info in a few minutes.
WHY on earth do they allow someone with a 17:32 pb to participate in this race?? That is crazy - and definitely can cause problems for the field.
From LRC:
"As the main pack of runners were approaching 3200 meters, chaos ensued as the pack began to lap Chad’s Bibiro Ali Taher (17:32 pb). As the pack tried to move around Taher, some sped up to get by on the inside, others moved outside and some, like Hamblin, slowed to avoid her. As Hamblin’s pace slowed, she was plowed into from behind by the seven-time NCAA champ D’Agostino and both runners went sprawling to the track."
move over, Derek Redmond....
there's a new sheriff in town, and her name is Abby D.
Final or not, this girl has NO idea how famous she is going to be after the telecast tonite.
Stones, Abby. Pure stones.

I thought Hamblin (NZL) caught the foot of the Japanese runner in front of her, who had just been jostled by an Australian runner. It was all caused by everyone trying to get around that lapped runner (Taher?), who really should have never been on the track in the first place. I think the lapped runner ended up with a DNF. All that carnage for nothing.

Bingo - Abbey just happened to be at wrong place at wrong time. The only contact she had was falling over the NZ girl who initiated the contact

Wow, how gutsy that was. Made me think of all those soccer P***ies and their flops. Tough as nails, I hope she can come back from this.
Or like those track guys getting pushed off the track by little Africans half their size and DNFing.

So who was DQ'd to allow THREE additional runners to advance to final?
Another question - why did Nikki Amblin (NZ) go down in the first place?

That was the most God-awful recount of what happened that I have seen.
Plowed into from behind by Abby? There are pictures right there in your article that says otherwise. Hamblin was well on her way down to the track before Abby ever got to her.
