LRC deleted one thread about the Newtonian physics of diving, and whether (or when) it was faster to dive. So there's an agenda.
Official LRC opinion
What a finish. This is what the Olympics is all about.
Diving is worse than PEDs. It should be automatic DQ.
Yes, because you can be the "winner" by having your chest on the line, not crossing the finish, and having the rest of the field pass your corpse.
It is obvious from the photo finish that half of the middle of Felix's body crossed the finish line while Miller's middle was still behind the line.

Um no. The photo shows that Miller's waist crosses the line at the same time as Felix's chest first breaks the plane.
All I know is that the elegant/graceful Felix was robbed at the line by a clumsy flopping on the floor. Doesn't seem to me that finishes should happen like that.
If her legs were locking up (lactate), probably the switch from vertical to horizontal (rotate fall forward) with one final boost was faster than continuing striding.

Um no. Overhead photo.

I thought the dive was awesome! I was a little sad that Felix didn't win but I loved the drama of the dive. So much commitment!
And did you see the slo-mo of Miller sliding across the track? Ouch. It makes track more like Nascar, and people love Nascar.
Talk about the most useless camera view known to man (over head). Anyway, here's the official finish cam view.

Yeah, but then you could run until your legs lock up and just let yourself fall across the finish line in an oafish manner. Maybe I'm out of touch and that's what people want to see.

Winner also did well to rotate right shoulder forward, left shoulder (rotated back) would have been a lot closer. Just like cats in mid-air.
That photo shows the lower half of Miller behind the back half of Felix.
Only the arms and one-half of Miller's body are at the finish line.
What is she stopped right there as in your photo? The other runners pass her across the line. Is Miller your winner?
You need to understand how the finish cam works... it's a space slice parallel to the finish line (time moves right to left), not a time slice. Miller (winner) was moving about just as fast as Felix across the line, otherwise her body would be distorted.

But being taller, in the starting blocks her center of mass was probably further back to start with.

Yeah, I thought Bmart and Eccleston hurling themselves over the line at Olympic trials was excellent drama. So exciting and showed how much they wanted it. But Miller looks like she is falling or her legs are about to go and it's a last-ditch heave. Lucky her body is long.
Yes. Diving is boring. How many other sports are there where competitors sit in a hot tub during competition? It's basically a scantily-clad modeling contest with some gymnastics exercises added in for good measure.
