Yes, diving is just an exaggerated running stride.

The same reason why MLB players don't dive into 1st; they run through it. It's faster. Also, I'm sure diving onto the track probably HURTS.This is factually false. In baseball, you want to get an extremity to a given point. Your foot is almost always faster, particularly as it is closer to the ground.
But in track, you have to get a part of the torso ahead, and by rotating oneself from vertical to horizontal, the center of mass stays the same but the relevant contact point is moved forward. This is often faster. outweighing the partial stride lost.
QED.
That makes no sense... haha. If there is ever an option to run through something or dive to a stop, always run through since diving will slow your forward momentum. Regardless of what part of the body needs to be in front.

No, even in youth leagues we teach players to run thru first base, instead of diving. It's slower to gather yourself to dive than to keep driving with your legs.
Uhhh. and yet the dive into 2nd and 3rd and home?
I think the thing to remember here is that regardless of which part of the body needs to pass the plane of the line first, diving will always be slower than running since if your feet stop pushing off, you will loose forward momentum in exchange for some downward momentum. Running across the plane is the shortest distance vs a downward arc towards diving to the ground.
She obviously would have won by more than .7 seconds if she didn't fall.
If everyone watches it again in slow motion, Shaunae Miller just fatigues completely, falls over and directs her fall forwards with her momentum. Her x direction clearly slows down and she nearly gets caught by Felix because of the stumble.
Really no diving or lunging or illegal antics in any way. Just watch the finish.
End of thread.

Amazing how many people here have no idea about the rules of track. Just think of it as in football. When any part of the football crosses the plane of the goal line it's a touchdown. The entire football does not have to cross.
Similar to track. The final time is when the upper torso hits the front of the finish line. The final time is not when the entire body crosses the line.

Track is not football. Track is running. Diving is not running. Football is trying to get a ball in the endzone by carrying it any almost any way possible.
Apples and oranges.

Interesting. I'll check it out. It certainly looked like an intentional dive when I was watching it live.
Of course, maybe you're trolling. Regardless, diving is a completely dishonorable way to win an Olympic Gold in a sprint and should be a DQ. This is sprinting. Diving is not sprinting.

You are taking the stand of a hobby jogger.
Like Kanye West said, "you lose."

Bingo.
And the butthurt Americans can just read the whole thread and see the examples of when you cheered for diving Americans.
(I said "the butthurt Americans", not the Americans who have posted and been totally reasonable)
Oh, and coach d just proves once again what a moron he is :)

Watch carefully. Look how much distance Felix gains during Miller's fall. If Shaunae had remained on her feet she would have clearly finished ahead of Felix. Only because of the fall does Felix very, very nearly win.
On Shaunae's way to the ground she realises she will fall short of the line and manages to get one more stride in (running) and then collapses across the line. She decelerates markedly through this process.

Yet again I am going to ask: Please define EXACTLY when a dive becomes a dive.
Should anyone who falls for any reason get an automatic DQ? Or should judges attempt to determine intent? Perhaps any fall within 10m of the finish line?
Do you see how utterly stupid this idea is?

It doesn't matter! If you can do a 400m crabwalk down the lane faster than anyone can run, you still win the race. It's a race. It's only "sprinting" because people who are going fast tend to do so by sprinting. I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand? The goal is to finish faster than your competition, and that is the ONLY goal.
I don't understand the absolute blind loyalty by fans simply because somebody has a singlet on with the name of the country you live in. If you love AF so much, Would you not like her if she lived 90 miles away in the Bahamas? Grow up.

As far as I knew the diving championships were in a different venue. She didn't have any twists, but I'd give her a 8.5 for that dive. Degree of difficult is high because she had to sprint exactly 398 meters before diving with good form.
Lol
