That 8xmile workout is impressive. I'm starting to believe Galen has a legit chance to win the marathon.

To win? God no. He will play it safe when the crazy move is made, 5 of the top 7 East Africans will DNF/fall apart and he will snag bronze as Kipchoge wins and Biwottt/Ghirmay or Kiprotich survives to take silver.
Three ads just popped up when I tried to open it in my browser. Runners World just isn't worth my time.

I have never downloaded anything special onto my iPhone 6. It is the same as it was the day I bought it (apart from the updates that pop up on my screen). I have never experienced problems with popups from any sites including this one and Runners World. I see complaints on here non stop. Do this many morons have android devices or am I just lucky?
The marathon in bad conditions is fickle, but I don't think he'll beat Kipchoge. Although I know I would be shocked to watch it happening, I would not be shocked to see Rupp get silver.
Also, reading that article, I'd forgotten the splits from the BU post race workout. The first four are simple for him. 4:01 is fast, yes.
Not as outrageous as I thought at first.
In the Marathon, I don't think Kipchoge is beatable. However, I do think Rupp will make a run for it with Biwott and will win Silver.
Rupp is as clean as you can get. He has worked hard, refined his craft, and had tremendous support and resources along the way.
Rupp has a decent shot at a medal in the marathon. Sub-27 track speed and a very good marathon debut. To be sure, the competition is better than ever as the marathon has risen to premier status in track and field. Rupp could have a fantastic race and finish fifth, but he could have the race of his life and medal.
I understand what people mean by thinking Kipchoge is unbeatable. He is one of the greats, but the marathon--particularly the Olympic marathon--is ruthless on favorites. Shorter was the favorite in '76 and got silver. DeCastella and Seko were the favorites in '84 and didn't medal. Paul Tergat was a favorite in 2004 and faded.
It's very difficult to predict what will happen, in part because the top guys are more accustomed to running when pacemakers are present. Championship style marathoning mixes things up. Nevertheless, Kipchoge is definitely the favorite going into this race, but the talent pool is deep and anyone of ten guys could win. Galen Rupp is among those ten--in my view.

Just lucky. RW sucks for ads. Phone marginally better than the full website but at least it doesn't freeze my browser like Letsrun.
Rupp is an amazing talent, however I would feel better about him getting a medal in the Marathon if he didn't have to run the 10000m prior to it. Depending on the type of race the 10000 is could determine how much he has to give in the Marathon. I have read reports where the Kenyans are going hard from the gun in the 10000 to try to take the sting out of Farahs kick??? We shall see, it should be good.

It blows my mind that you or anyone else on this thread think that Rupp has a shot at a medal.

Sorry to have to be the one to tell you, but as someone who knows something about marathon running (that's me, not you), I think you're an idiot.
the runner was carrying too much bulk and muscle in his upper body.
Despite 100+ miles a week. Seems legit.
And the recovery powers that Rupp has built through years of exacting labor, of course, are the same ones promised by PEDs:/i]
This time it's different. The critics are just bitter losers. Salazar runs a never testing positive doping program. That means clean. Suck it, haters.

I still have the $100 bill framed that I made with a friend in 2004. I said Meb would get a medal, he said no way. I would not bet $100 on Galen, but I'd wager $25.
In the 10000, I don't expect him to improve over 2015 unless the Kenyans truly go for the gun and risk blowing up.
In the marathon, I think he runs his own race and tries to close well. I don't think he will medal but could do as well as Rothlin did in 2008.
Rupp absolutely has a shot at a medal in this race. Here's why.
1. He's proven himself to be good at running in the heat, and I guarantee you that he will have prepared as much as any other runner in the race for the conditions, apart from any Brazilians maybe.
2. Favorites don't mean much in championship marathons. The Eliud Kipchoges and Wilson Kiprops will drop out if anything isn't perfect because they can make $$$ in a fall marathon. I hope this isn't the case with Eliud but I wouldn't bet against it.
3. Meb 2004. Let's look at some results from Meb in 2003-04. 13:20 5000m. 27:24 10000m at stanford. 43:19 road 15k. 2:10:03 in Chicago, 10/03. Do any of those results make you think Meb would take silver in Athens? Probably not. Rupp ran 13:08 in '15, 27:08 at WCs '15, 61:20 solo 13.1, won OTQ 2:11:12.
I'm not gonna predict gold for Galen, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him medal. I'd bet on top 5 for him.

As an athlete, Salazar was haunted by a fear of losing. As a coach, he helps Rupp learn from adversity. “We talk about that a lot,†Rupp says. “He tells me I shouldn’t let fear or anger drive me. It’s okay to get down after a bad race, but you can’t get so emotionally invested in the negative stuff that you let it cloud your judgment.â€
So I guess that pure hate is not Rupp-certified.

So running slow the year of an Olympic Marathon is an indicator that you're going to medal. Got it.
Galen will win the Olympic marathon. He's dead on when he says championship marathons are way, way different than big-money, rabbited time trials like Berlin or Chicago--especially in the heat. Remember last year's Worlds in Beijing, which everyone thought would be this big battle between Kipsang, Kimetto, Desisa, et al.? Then a no-name 19-year-old from Eritrea wins it.
Galen has been preparing his entire training life for a move to the marathon. Alberto has groomed him from high school for this moment. His credentials are impeccable--Alberto spent years honing his track speed while carefully increasing mileage, and now he's ready for the marathon. His buildup has been impeccable this spring/summer.
As an aside, I think he'll probably take bronze in the 10k.

There are only 3 Kenyans in the race, one of them is Wesley Korir.
How can you not think Rupp has a shot at a medal? He crushed Meb at the Trials. Meb was 4th in the last Olympics.
