Running in college is sacred. Stay in it and roll with the punches. Figure out everything you can to help the situation and don't burn too many bridges along the way.
Mmm... Going to Letsrun to discuss this topic?
Odds of the coach reading this board or being made aware of the discussion on this board is 99%+
The facts are so specific that the coach will recognize the athlete
The coach/athlete relationship has been broken (at a very minimum)
Once this thread started, the table was already set...
Odds of this coach wanting to coach this athlete now is low
Odds of another coach ever wanting this athlete now is even lower (who would want this type of person on his team. We have half the story here)
The scholarship issue has now become secondary.
There was no reason to discuss this on a public board.
Social IQ is more important than a 3.9 GPA.
Or this could be a 9/10 troll...

If he chooses to run, but then "dogs it" to screw the coach he also screws his friends/teammates.
How he runs is his own freaking business. Get a life, idiot.
It's not apparent you read the original post. He's the one that put the priority on his relationship with his teammates.
I happen to agree with that part of his thought process; however. I think the relationships you have throughout your life are what will determine how happy/satisfied you will be.
At the very least, he made a mistake in not properly addressing the scholarship reduction right away. That was a poor choice with consequences.
What does he do from this point to make the best of the situation?
Based on the information provided, I don't think he's in a situation where lawyers are going to help with that.
Note: If he really believed what you do, I don't think he would have asked a bunch of anonymous people on a message board "what do I do?"
This same thing happened to my son as a baseball player 10 years ago when he received a letter stating that his partial scholarship (fresh yr) was removed, 2 weeks before school was to start, but was expected to keep playing as rostered /non scholarshipped (soph yr). LHP w/ lots of upside at a lower-level D1 Midwest state school.
We checked with the NCAA about legality of the situation, and they didn't want to go there. Called the head coach next, but he was on "vacation". Called the AD third. He refused to engage in any clarification why. Fourth, head coach calls back 5 minutes to apologies for the "situation".
My son was pissed. They exposed themselves with their spineless responses. They also took a gamble assuming my son would return any way. (I lobbied him to return and show them up). He waked, and went to JC. Perfected a circle change, was recruited by 13 D1 schools, and then thrived at a top 20 D1 program.
Take aways: 1) Stay away from legal response. Wasted energy. Move On! 2)Answer the Q of" how bad do I want to compete?". (1-5) If the answer is 5, and you don't compromise academics, move on to do better things. Consider other choices/schools, weigh them thoroughly, honestly, then decide. You DO have choices!
Your present situation doesn't make your soul!!

Coach
Hey stupid coach,
I wouldn't run for you if hell froze over, am transferring, and am telling all my friends about what you have done. My advice to you is to go screw yourself.
P.S.
I'm not in need of your help any more.
If he ACCIDENTALLY cut your scholarship then he would be up for fixing his accident. Talk to him. If he is not willing to fix his mistake, the go to his administrator and make him aware of the situation. Make sure you let him know that that is what you are going to do. I bet it is fixed before you leave his office.
Also, depending on the conference you are in, he may not even be able to do this. The administration will have your back 100% if this was a mistake and you didn't warrant this by being a "documented" problem. Good luck!!
there is no accident, if you are lost then you haven't listened in your compliance meetings where they gave you written information and told you what their job was.
call or go see your compliance director and they will tell you where you stand and what your options are.
I have never gotten in any sort of trouble or done something to get it cut. Also, I highly doubt my coach knows what LR is and haven't said anything that reveals my ID or the school I'm at. The fake who said it was my coach is a troll
Also, I have no relationship with my head coach so there is nothing to be broken
But thank you to those of you that offered real advice and input, it definitely helped. I'll keep you updated
again, it sounds like you haven't read what you signed or listened in your team compliance meeting.
in most cases, scholarships are 1 year renewable. you could set the world record, and still get cut if the coaches choose and you don't appeal.
so GO SPEAK TO COMPLIANCE. maybe it is too late already, maybe not.
FOR SURE this message board is not the place to seek advice.

Blah, blah. You should have ran faster, then you'd be fine. Instead, someone is better and you're now expendable. Boo hoo hoo.
Sounds like your going to have to go home DEVASTATED!!!
