I've been very critical of athletes and times of the EPO era. Bernard was a part of that era, and ran 3:26. In my book, he's as suspicious as any of them.
BUT...
All of a sudden we're talking about "rumors" floating around Lagat for years? Aside from the false A sample, there have been NO rumors floating around Lagat. People are now deciding to fabricate stories that never existed in the first place. Lagat has long been one of the most respected and liked guys on the circuit.
It's just as likely that Lagat was a great natural talent, capable of 3:29/3:30, and realised that the only way he could compete with EL G and Ngeny was to take EPO as well, at a time when there was no reliable test that could detect it, bringing him down to 3:26.
Once the test became more reliable in 2005, followed by the blood passport, he stopped taking and went back to being what he was before EPO.
And what are the long term benefits of taking EPO for a long time? We already know there is a lot of evidence that steroid use gives advantages that remain long after the athlete stops using.
Regardless of the confusion surrounding the false positive A sample in 2003, I would be very surprised if any of those running ridiculously fast times from 1994 - 2005 weren't using EPO. And that includes Lagat.
