They seem like a pretty bad D1 team, but does anyone here have any experience running for them, what the coach is like.
I'm pretty slow, but if I need to (its my safety) I'd like to walk on there.

Coach is an old guy who's been there forever.
...but a good coach. No money. He makes chicken soup out of chicken shit.

This is correct. Within some limits (UMass has to deal with title IX) - you work hard and do what he says you will be treated fairly and improve. Screw around then don't expect to be there long.
UMass athletic site has been down for weeks?
They get rolled on by the little D3 school across town quite frequently

OB is a good coach. He makes do with the money he does get from the school and alumni. Alumni just funded the recent locker room remodeling project that was done this summer, and rumor has it that it is the alumni who keep the men's XC/TF afloat because university has not offered much money and want to drop the program (rumor). OB splits up the athletic scholarship money he does get so it can aid as many men as possible (but prefers the long distance guys since they can do three seasons).
As for accepting walk-ons, I believe he holds try-outs since he can only have so many spots on the travel roster. Not sure when they are but if you really are interested in running for UMass, email him. He should be able to respond with those details.
I know the UMass TF/XC alumni is pretty active on Facebook... Look for their group

That is quite true!
If you're looking for a D1 state school in MA, head to Lowell and become a RiverHawk.
