A guy walks into a party at the cross country house. A group of runners are in front of the bar taking a snap story of their captain destroying a beer bong and a few more are taking shots. As the man walks thru the crowd to the other end of the house he overhears another group of runners giving they're buddy crap for not drinking. As his buddies push beer on him the sober runner responds "I don't want to, we've got a race in a week and it'll mess with my training". His buddies laugh and say "Bro, I know lots of guys who get trashed and still run well. The (*insert top running team here*) guys get smashed every weekend, its not even going to affect you".
My question is: Who is right? Can you get trashed and still make improvements or are the two mutually exclusive. If so, how does drinking (to intoxication) affect your training? What is the scientific research to show how alcohol impacts training?
