Ok, nearly half of that race was run on a completely flat surface. That first loop is uphill, and then it's downhill as well, so that pace will hurt the average much less. Yes there is the 50% grade but if you look at the map, that can't be more than 200 meters of distance, so yes your average pace is slowed but it's not for that long. Only ONE person was able to average fast than 8 minutes per mile. I don't think there are many people that claim to be very fit that are in their prime years that RACE at 8 minutes per mile, no matter how hilly. I've run under 17 only a handful of times, and I have done long runs of 12-14 miles with 2,000 feet of vertical climbing and have averaged 6:50-7:00, on a TRAINING RUN.Crossfitters are the best people in the world at crossfitting (as was said by someone else). They are not the fittest people. Someone like Ashton Eaton is the fittest person in the world. Extreme power/endurance in all muscle groups and is a faster middle distance runner than a good portion of people on this website. To run the number of races and compete in the number of events he does at the high level and short time he does is leaps and bounds beyond anything crossfitters do.The fittest person in the world will always be the world leader in the decathlon.

Did you see how steep some portions of that course were? It was climbing, not jogging/running in parts of that race. That'll kill the average pace per mile real quick when you are going 1-2mph up a 50 degree incline.
