Yesterday was my 8th sick day of the year. We're entitled to 10 here but I was warned in the office today. I told them they don't intimidate me as I know my workers rights.

Fvck em. They're d1ckholes. I've taken 34 this year so far.
None.
New job/Probationary Period.
If you sense desperation here, you would be right about that.
Were you actually sick, or taking "mental health" days? I've taken about 0.5 days...went to the dentist twice.
If companies seriously don't understand why people aren't loyal this pretty much sums it up. Berating workers for taking days off they are entitled to take off. Do they wonder why people get burned out working 40+ hours a week for years with no end in sight?
Laid off at the moment but prior to that I worked for a company that had unlimited vacation/sick days (i.e. no policy at all - do what you want as long as you get your work done, we're all adults).
Most people, myself included, took very few sick days. I think I took one during the winter where I didn't work at all, and worked from home three other days when I had a cold and didn't want to bring it into the office. Many people would pride themselves on taking zero year after year.
It's interesting that when companies stop micromanaging people, they tend to actually work harder.
Note that this doesn't work across the board. A small number of people will take full advantage. My manager, who was one of the most horrible people I've worked for or with to date, took "sick" days at least once every two weeks. Sometimes more than once a week. And two or three week vacations a couple of times a year. Rumor had it that she was sleeping with someone higher up, which is why she was never penalized. But she was laid off the same day I was. Best of luck to her with the job search!

Yeah we have the same approach at my job. There are official sick days (8 to be specific) but people rarely actually bother using these. You just let your boss know if youre sick or have a doctor's appt or whatnot and 99% of the time they'll understand. People who abuse this privilege don't last long anyway.
2 sick days in almost 10 years of service. We were entitled to 6 and they were use or lose. This year they got rid of the sick day policy and just created paid time off which essentially just added 6 more vacation days to my bank.
I don't take any sick days... because if I'm sick I just nut up and work for a day and then take my laptop home and work from there.
so we have a guy that brags about not taking days off, about having a good work ethic and was laid off anyway. We have others who think they are doing the right thing by not taking off, tough it out, be a man, suck it up. Your employers don't care about you and will take off when they feel ill you should too. Don't be a martyr, don't feel guilty about taking off when you need a mental or physical break.
By the way I've averaged 1 day off in my first 25 years of work and 4 these last 10 years as family obligations warrant so I'm not a slacker.
Where I work, we get 13 sick days per year. But god forbid that you actually use them. Once you take more than 4, you are put on a "corrective action plan" which means that if your attendance percentage does not improve the following year, they can move to have you fired. I used 2 days this year, but went to work sick several times out of fear for my job. I don't know why we are given 13 days if we can't use them.
I've taken eight, but it was for doctor's appointments (wife was pregnant, had baby). I've taken one hour four times for the chiro.
We get 15 days a year which keep accruing. I'm about to take 13 weeks for paternity leave + vacation.
I'm in the same boat as several others, no sick time just lumped PTO. I haven't taken any sick days and probably never will unless it is very serious (I don't want to give up vacation time just so I can sit at home and be sick... I'd rather sit at work and be sick)
With previous employers that gave me separate sick time (~2 weeks), I usually used a 1-3 when I was actually sick and 1-3 playing 'hookie'

I'm a self-made thousandaire. I take all the sick days I want
I'm a teacher. Contractually I am considered a 10-month employee. I haven't worked since June 26 and I won't resume till September 4th. When I do, along with all school holidays, I have up to 15 available days (sick, family sick, flex, business/emergency). I usually take 90% of them because life is for living. For example, this morning I woke up and went for a run and then proceeding to do whatever the hell I want. I will continue this endless weekend approach for many many days. And the. I will do it all again next summer. Ahhh...sick days over the summer? Never had one of them.
Running? 0
Last day off was sometime in March of 2015.
I get 12 paid sick days a year. I've used four so far, and was legitimately sick for none of them. I'll probably take a couple more by the end of the year. I don't see this as an abuse of the system and I sincerely doubt that anyone in my office would, either. I am lucky not to be surrounded by a bunch of uptight, sanctimonious morons; the percentage of humane work environments in this country is absurdly low.
I'd me interesting how you were "warned."
Was it from HR and a reminder that after 10 sick days your pay gets docked?
Was it you boss saying, hey I've noticed you been sick a lot lately?
Either way sick days are there to use for a reason. If you are sick stay home and do t get everyone else sick.
Now we've had the guy take a sick day to be seen at the airport. He got dinged for that one.
