Adductor strain??

I'm a collegiate runner who has been sidelined for the past year (since July 2015) with what is suspected to be an adductor strain. I have done physical therapy/rehab since last August but there has been no improvement. I have tried cross friction massage at the suggestion of a doctor for about a month but that has not helped (my PT has also only done it for 2-3 minutes on each side and she doesn't seem to have done it with enough force so that may be it). Regardless, my insurance says PT is not helping so they are no longer covering it.

Any suggestions? I'm seeing a doctor about PRP this week but it will cost $750 for each shot and as a student, that is a lot for something that may or may not work. Has anyone had success with acupuncture?

I am at my ropes end here, I cannot spend another year sitting out. All suggestions are appreciated!

Get a good friend or a girlfriend to use their elbow and try and hammer that thing out. Hip/Glute strengthening and cross-training. That's about all I got.

The MRI in September showed a stress reaction which healed. A second MRI in March showed nothing.

Not that my case is the same as your case, but I've been dealing with a very similar situation which started last Fall, when I felt a "pop" in the medial side of my thigh while on a run (I had been somewhat stiff in the region for a couple weeks prior), mri showed stress reaction but also showed injury to the muscles that attached at the location of the stress reaction, which were adductor magness and vastas medialis.

My road to improvement, managed by a terrific chiropractor named Rob Green (an avid triathlete, in Richmond, VA), involved Graston therapy, ART, hip flexor stretches, dynamic stretching exercises for the adductors and quads, and hip girdle strengthening exercises without weight (clamshells, straight leg raises while lying on my side, doggie "fire hydrants", standing one-leg hurdle step throughs, forwards and backwards, etc.). I later added 1 leg hops on the injured leg.

I was back running again after a 2 weeks of this therapy (started back with a very conservative run/walk protocol), still some pain, but continued to improve. I'm about 80-90% better now, 2 months since first working with Dr. Green (only had to see him for about 4 weeks), now running 45 minutes/day with minimal discomfort.

Every athlete brings a different set of issues to the table, so to speak, when they have a particular injury, which may be the exact same injury as another, but the cause may be different, and thus the treatment strategy may need to be different. Good luck!

My team doctor thought it was a sports hernia after I asked him if it might be (thanks to the letsrun thread lol), but I saw Dr. Maharam in NYC afterwards and talked to the physical therapists at home this summer and both say it's not a sports hernia.
