Did you guys experience some tightness and sore called when first fully transitioning to flats?
Yes. I once transitioned into shoes with a very low amount of padding, and my calves became very tight and sore after runs. For me, I pushed through it and my legs got used to it.
I feel like your calves have to absorb a lot more force when you have less cushioning, so that may be the cause. A lot of people who transition into minimalist/barefoot-style shoes also complain of calf pain, so...

I started running in flats my freshman year of college. No calf issues or adjustments. I have a very efficient form, so if you are having trouble with flats, you are probably doing something incorrectly.
no, just the opposite for me. Tightness and ankle and foot problems went away almost immediately when I started training in the brooks t3 and streak xc 1 and I never looked back.

Fixed it for you. Flats force you to run with better form by making you mid-foot strike. It is likely that the OP was heel striking with his old shoes because of the larger heel drop on them, but the flats force you to use your midfoot and toes which means there will be more stress on your calf and achilles trying to keep your heel from touching the ground, whereas there is almost no stress on the achilles and calves (on the way down) if you heel strike.
On the flip side... would it be normal to experience knee pain when trying to transition from running exclusively in flats to a higher drop shoe, ie the Boston Boost?
