If you can pause it at 1:35.3 you can see Montano's knee contacting Martinez' left foot.
People on the rail don't trip up people to the outside of them when there is separation. not physically possible. trips happens front to back. But no one was in front of BMART. So yeah, BMART tripped up Montano FROM THE FRONT, which in tin foil hat speak means, was her fault. Poor Montano.
This meet and oly are big $$$ for and from sponsors to athletes in bonuses, so no, we don't care about medals. Putting food on the table and in the bank for when they stop racing is base level Maslow stuff.
Usatf is never going to give them a rerun or even consider dq'ing anyone in a race where it's a non-Nike athlete affected by a foul. If BMART was a Nike athlete there would be a rerun, no questions asked.
I guess usatf doesn't care about medaling in the 800 at the olympics... BMART is the only chance the US had at getting a medal in 800. Too bad
Just watched the race on youtube - this definitely needs to be re run. What happened is completely unfair.
Complete F%3¢#2king Rip-Off!
Montano pushed too hard from behind into the front and her knee hit Martinez' foot - plain and simple - she's at fault! But I have to say Martinez didn't accelerate past on the right but instead hung there on the leads shoulder without going around for a just a split second, which caused the backup as the others behind started to accelerate expecting them to take off. A 'Cat and Mouse Game' that then ends up in a collision. When you ride or match someones shoulder on the curve, even for a split second, you risk getting tailgated by others coming up. Montano was greedy for pushing too close in the middle and should have gone to the right of Martinez but didn't want to run the extra distance, so just tried to bulldoze her way to the front and 'F'ed' everybody up in doing so!
Uh, no. It is always the trailing runners responsibility to avoid contact, not the lead runner. If you want to pass, it's your responsibility to GO AROUND the lead runner. It's not the lead runner's responsibility to get out of your way, even if they did have eyes on the back of their head.
If they were to re-run it, should Montano be allowed to run since it was clearly a foul?
The entire pack bunched up right before the collision, there was pressure for the entire field to move up from behind. Montano was caught in this and freaked out. It was a poor athletic decision, she was not patient. Montano deserves to be DQd, but it is ridiculous that Brenda is out of an Olympic team.
One thing I'm more concerned about is Wilson. She is supposed to be our best medal threat, yet after running poorly in Europe she makes the team but doesn't dominate and loses to a 1500 runner. She's not looking like a medal threat at all.
You're obviously never ran a race on the track to think you will never accidentally clip someones foot, especially with an Olympic bid on the line.

Wilson has been lackluster all season because she knows she has no chance against Semenya and Niyonsaba plus there will always be a doper or two. Just going through the motions. At least she got that Kellogg's cereal endorsement, she deserves it.

Montano was out of control. Weirdly running outside of lane one and letting Rogers through, then tries to scrabble through the mess she made, taking down Brenda in the process. Then the real craziness comes out. Yechh.
From the screen shot it is apparent that BMart got clipped by Montano, didn't tag Wilson. Also a certified miracle that Grace won it from that point.
This is how I saw it after replaying it many times. BMart was in good position and contact was made from Mantano literally running into her from behind. What an effing idiot. She should be DQed and given a 4 year ban from competing at USA's. She was a hazard, messed up the race for almost everyone in it, and deprived Brenda of her Olympic spot and America of one of our best T&F athletes competing for us. Intentional or not, what a POS.

So True! You can't simply push or slam people out of the way from behind, you've got to run around them - inside or out. Kind of a Zola Budd collision where Decker didn't budge and ran into her when "Her Perfect Momentum" was interrupted by this young upstart in front of her. This "I'm coming through get the hell out of my way bitch attitude" needs to be punished. Solinski was sabotaged similarly a few years back after by being shoved inside off the track. Mantano was at fault.

Everyone keeps saying "they aren't a medal threat." Learn about the competition, just a little. No 100% female born runner is a favorite to win a medal basically. Wilson will be USA first finisher. Her race will be against Bishop and a few other legitimate sub 2 girls.
Alllisha Montano was the victim. She was in place to win but BM was slowing down and clipped Montano from the front. I am not even sure BM should have been in the race.

At 1:35.3 you can clearly see Martinez's left foot inside of Montano's right knee.
Montano clearly fouled Martinez.
+1
I don't know how you could watch this and come to any other conclusion.

No, Martinez tripped when she stepped on Wilson's heel.
Exactly what you're screeching about Montano doing to Martinez.
I've watched a few more times by now, with the benefit of Zapruder and others' frame-by-frame analysis, and I've reconsidered. I'm now firmly in the Montano-clipped-Martinez-from-behind camp.
Josh Cox's Twitter feed says that they all watched a video after a protest was filed. He said Rogers moved out, Martinez and Rogers had contact, and when Martinez stumbled, Montano accidentally ran into Martinez. I believe Cox may be Kate Grace's agent

Montano was tired. She ran in the lead, pre-baby baller mode, but didn't have that fitness here. Not sure she had awareness either, as she was running well off the rail and even let Ravyn ROgers take her on the inside, there was so much room. Everyone was going around her at 250 to go, inside, outside. She runs kinda bow legged too so someone could have snuck up through there, I'm sure
So, the last 150, dog tired, losing her mind with fatigue and RISING emotion, she lost her perceptual awareness, and clips BMART, as her emotional side overtook everything.
Most importantly, BMARTS shot.
This explanation feel more right to me than any other. I think it's quite possible that Montano didn't realize she'd clipped Martinez because she, Montano, was almost immediately clipped from behind. You go down hard, all that stuff blends together.
We need other angles. Fan videos.
