They are both going to win olympic gold medals and become American heroes, so the question will be asked sooner or later. What would be a fair distance for them to race at?

611m
It would probably be about 800 meters. But it could be about 600 as the previous poster suggested. Gatlin is huge for a sprinter and could be huffing and puffing and crawling down the stretch against Rupp, who would feel like a 800 race is warm to start up the system.
280 meters

The distance of an Intramuscular injection needle.
Justin will win easily.
Go Bad Wigins!!!

Gatlin has ran a sub 45.00 4x4 split so to think he could manage a 600 is realistic. anything longer than that is all Rupp.
Indoor Run Across America
Justin Gatlin is already a gold medalist. Forgetting 2004?
I disavow this thread, it is a dumb standard topic and a bad platform just for a few Galin or Rupp jokes. I had a much better idea about giant pterodactyls afterwards, but now I can't start a thread about that or I'd be soapboxing.

When did Gatlin do that???

A marathon runner would absolutely smoke a sprinter over 800m, it wouldn't even be close - check out those decathlon carthorses.
I could see a top class 200m sprinter, like gatlin can be, doing a very good 400m and possibly holding out up to 500m+
Beyond there, we're getting into the slow twitch zone and he'd shut down pretty quickly.

So you're saying 550m

Seems about right

*has run
and imho a 600 would be a stretch for Gatlin.
165M
515 meters.
Rupp has run a 1:50 800m. Gatlin has a 44.3r relay split from his UT day. Both are from years ago. I doubt Gatlin is running 1:50 and obviously rupp isn't dropping anything sub say 49 or so. I would expect 600-700ms to be the split point.
Given Gatlin 1 year to train and a 10 million dollar incentive, 800ms might be interesting.
370 meters
Rupp would win at 400 meters.
In said race, do they both have to be clean?

^^^
no?do you not realize how easy say a 1:55 would be for a 44.xx sprinter assuming he does a least a minuscule amount of extensive tempo? or baylor? or literally anything that trains cardio.
let's say a 1:55 800m is roughly a 2:2x marathon (don't rip me apart i don't feel like looking up conversions)... seriously a good 100m guy with a bit of strength has a much better chance at beating a marathoner at an 800m..
