If I were Rupp, I'd take one more shot at the 5k/10k double, bring the hype of an un-run Olympic marathon to whatever his debut is in open competition, and move teammate Puskedra onto the marathon team (good bonuses).

Would you rather see him go for 5k 10k times in the summer (12:50low or 26:40) or go back in his cave after Rio and run 2:04-5 in the fall?
rupp won't make the team in the 5000
If Rupp runs strongly in the 5K, as I suspect, he will drop the marathon and do one last 10k/5k double per their original plan. His primary focus is on the 10K at Rio and he needs to concentrate on speed between now and the Olympics to be competitive over the final 800 meters of that race. However, if Rupp isn't feeling the speed and/or if Jenkins places 4th, then Rupp might drop the 5K and make room for his teammate Jenkins to be on the Olympic team.
No way Rupp dumps the marathon. He's been running 145 mile weeks with hard 22 mile long runs. After all that work I'd be shocked he would dump the marathon for the 5K. His best chance for Gold is in the marathon.
I'm a friend of Luke's. He says he's not only ready to run the marathon, he's ready to send the rest of the Olympic competition home devastated!

This is classic Rupp/Saladbar obnoxious crap. He could run a 5k in Europe to see how he feels. But nope! Have to keep as many other athletes are possible waiting for him to make a decision.
It is his right, but it is selfish in the extreme.
Don't forget that the trials also serve as the US championships. No shame in competing for another US title even if he doesn't intend to compete in the 5k in Rio.

Barring injury. Then, oops ... no Rio.

Yea, but Rupp is one of the mos injury resistant guys out there.
I know it was just a prelim, but based on his performance yesterday I really think this is all going to be a moot point. I don't see Rupp finishing top 3 much less having some kind of transcendent race which would cause him and Al Sal to drop their marathon plans in order to run the 5000 instead.
Rupp is set up for a big Fall marathon pay day. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he drops the Olympic marathon in muggy Brazil if he runs well in the 5K finals in Eugene.
