OK, so I guess if you aren't wealthy, don't try and support your talented child's athletic gift? Is that what you are saying? You know, I kind of agree with you in the sense that, since we are raising nine kids on one income, we did not purposely encourage our kids to take up sports that belong to the wealthy- ice hockey, figure skating, golf, sure I'm missing a few pricey sports. Because we could not afford it and we knew it. We didn't join in the "travel soccer" or "travel basketball" money mills either. But most people don't consider TRACK to be an expensive sport.
And there are 1000's of elite kids? Really? Last time I checked there were 15 high schoolers in the trials, which I think is probably some sort of record.
I bet if your kid was good enough for a once in a lifetime opportunity, you'd try really hard to provide it. And if you had friends who cared enough about your kid's opportunity, and cared about you being able to experience the opportunity with your child, maybe they would try to find a way to make it happen.
And she goes by KATE, not Katie...pay attention. Another detail you missed is that KATE did not go out and solicit funds...one of her supporters did, a guy who is a big supporter of youth track in her area.

Oh, I'm well acquainted with the negativity on LetsRun- usually I ignore the ignorance, but this incident was more personal. I'm also well acquainted with not having funding for travel to meets, or even funding to join a team. I coach both a HS team and a youth team. We scholarship our families on our youth team who can't afford our registration fees. If those kids are good enough to do the AAU or USATF meets, we help them with hotels too. We try to keep our fees low because we know what it's like to have multiple kids in sports. We live in the wealthiest county in America, supposedly. Doesn't mean everyone can just spring for airline tickets and hotels and meals out. Sure, to many of our neighbors, that stuff is no big deal. If people want to help the Murphys get to the trials, maybe we should just celebrate that instead of seeing it as entitlement and begging for a handout. Sheesh. No one is forcing anyone to contribute to the GoFundMe, but since most LR posters are basement dwellers in their parents' home, they have nothing to do but complain about someone else's blessings.
As for unsponsored athletes not having support people, you are probably correct, but as I pointed out, they are ADULTS who have experience with meets like this, know how to travel on their own, etc. Kate is 16 years old. If people want to help her bring her dad, coach, and massage person, SO WHAT?

Yeah this totally believably sounds like it was written by a teenage girl the same age as Kate.
That is exactly what she says.
No she goes by ENTITLED white priviledged girl.
Also track is not the only sport.
I wouldn't be begging for the world to pay for the experience. That's what you seem to be misding.
Not sure what "white privilege" has to do with anything here. Or why you would assume Kate feels "entitled" since she did not set up the GoFundMe. I would imagine black people might have friends who want to do a GoFundMe for them as well. Again, no one is forcing anyone to contribute.
I don't even understand what you are trying to communicate. Track is not the only sport...? Who said it was?
Thankfully there are reasonable, thoughful people -- rich or poor, it doesn't matter -- who will read this classic, ugly LetsRun thread and recognize that the spirit of generosity, to boost the total positive experience for a stunning young talent and her SMALL support team, is pretty fantastic and certainly worthwhile. Forget the message board trolls. Forget the wretched who can't think outside their miserable small cages. Forget trying to justify to these Internet ghosts every penny one MIGHT spend. They won't go away, anyway, so it sure isn't worth popping a blood vessel challenging them.

Your sentiment is nice, but the username of that "mom" just screams troll.
Isn't this hiding-behind-anonymity thing just grand on this message board? Of course that applies to me, too.
Naturally, those of us who participate on this forum who actually have brains (I won't venture a guess as to the percentage) can readily comprehend who "Mom of Kate's Friend Drew" is -- and good for her for wearing her heart on her sleeve, but at the same time expressing herself forcefully and intelligently, and not being blinded by her emotions. If you want to call her a troll, Bring Back the 800, then I'm a troll, you're a troll, everyone's a troll troll!
LOL. Not a troll; take my word for it or don't, it doesn't matter to me. Every time I use my real identity on this board, I end up wondering, "What I was thinking!" I will revert to posting as "2o3indriodo33@%" or "nieowuxNY67!" :-)
I don't know why the people on these threads continue to amaze me with their stupidity. The only good thing about this hateful thread bashing a young girl trying to represent her country is that you brought more attention to her and helped raise more money.
Another entitled individual who raised $5,000 and just finished in last place in a semifinal. I wonder if the massage therapist didn't make the trip. Could have been the difference.
you know what's next? SHE JUST WENT HOME DEVASTATED!!!!!
High school kid in the Trials? People willing to choose to help her and her family and coaches go for the event of her life up to now? What's not to like?
Good job, Kate, and the whole LB program and their supporters.
You have 9 kids? Have you heard of birth control?
You cant afford a road trip
To Eugene but you can afford 9 kids? Right!
You know that is probably drew hunters mom and they adopted like 5 of their kids....what have you done?
How does the most massaged athlete out there NOT make the final??!!!!
I want my money back!!!!
