The crash and burn was worth it considering he picked up all those Strava Segment crowns earlier in the race.

Jeez, can you be an ultra runner and not look like that?
No! the rules of ultra running say you have to be hippish long hair (beard optional) and choose from one of the following diets 1.Vegan 2.Fruitarian 3.High Carb vegetarian 4.Paleo
Also you must worship the Sun and talk about freedom and nature all the time.

Or you could just win the race with a simple buzz cut and not talk about your diet at all, a la Andrew Miller.

Nice having some closer and hearing it from him... sounds like he was told to keep running for five minutes (3/4 mile) past the place where he was supposed to turn. He probably spent a better part of those 40 minutes off trail scouring for the turn only a half mile down the road. Good spirits though for a guy who is going home devastated. Perhaps he knows deep down that the 90 mile CR effort was still pretty brassy and he can sleep at night. But, you gotta wonder if he was just cracking on the inside feeling absolutely gutted.

You don't even have to know deep down about his effort. I think he proved to everybody that he is the top ultra runner in the United States right now.
He lost yesterday but he won't have too many losses in his future.

I hope Walmsley doesn't waste his talent with this race again next year. It does NOTHING for him. $0. Nada. Just an ego thing. Now that it's done, move on.
Walmsley can run 2:12 or better for the marathon, and in a crappy, hard race like an Olympic or World Championship like Rio or Barcelona or something hillier and harder, he could be up there with the Africans and be making six figures each year.
He should go to Europe and make some noise.

I've never understood why this is so but it often is.

That's one of the greatest attitudes that I've ever seen.

What are segment crowns?

JW 20th place. Got beat out by one more runner by 30 seconds or so. But he's finally done.
He was 19th, not 20th.
http://www.ultralive.net/ws100#tracking/menhttp://www.ultralive.net/ws100#tracking/womenSure there's no prize money, but he'll get a sponsorship deal out of this superb performance with a hugely blotched finish. And there will be plenty of endorsement and bonus money with the attention from an actual win and course record.
I wouldn't be surprised if he can run 2:12 or better for the marathon, but he's not going to make much money doing that. For one thing, a hard race like the Olympics is not available to him for another 4 years. Few people seem to care about the World Championships marathon anymore - haven't people been even passing up spots on the team? He should go to Europe and make some noise, but something like the UTMB, where there are a ton of fans and attention and therefore endorsement/money potential.
Ultra is as much about epic lore as results, and he certainly achieved that with this run.
He looks pretty fit to me. Too fit? He's not carrying any extra weight. There is no margin error missing aid stations. That is what did him in yesterday.
Great runner though!
Interesting interview

Check the pre race interview. He was aiming for 600 calories per hour, settling for 3-400, which is plenty of energy. He was done in by the swim, and by going off course.
Every year that winner interview is probably viewed by few people ... the background noise and echo are very unprofessional.
They should probably just build a bridge so people don't have to swim towards the end of the race.
My humble .02

They seem to be implying that there are fit, fast ultrarunners.
We've pretty much proved there that this isn't true, ultrarunners are a bunch of old, slow hobby joggers and walkers...
