Can Didrik Hermansen make up 25 minutes in the last 7 miles? He was my pick after I saw the picture of the start line and he was the only one who looked normal.

He should have used a known doper to pace him. Apparently Western States, the crown jewel of ultrarunning, is cool with that.
Sage is terrible. Why do people talk about him?
Running 100 miles on a track is what's stupid. The beauty of WS is that everyone lines up at point A and runs to point B. The only rules are stay on the course and no assistance.
Every runner has to figure out their best strategy to deal with the terrain, the heat, pacing, hydrating, and fueling. Miscalculations usually result in serious bonking or dropping.
I do feel bad for JW but this is all part of the race. And it shows why training on the course is so important. Still a valiant effort.
JW needs to get to an aid station so his crew can work on him.

+1
Hoping that JW comes back and goes after the course record in the future.

Yeah, but there is a guy out there who got assistance from a boat and then went off course. Where is the DQ for him?
And if they can't have assistance then what is with all the pacing (by banned dopers no less) and crews helping out?
He has to get to the aid station on his own. He can't accept a ride to the station without getting DQ'ed. He told people he intends to finish. All they can do is keep an eye on him, and intervene is they decide he needs medical attention. Then he has no choice but to drop out.

JW now in 4th.

No help was received. Try reading the prior posts and watching the video before making a fool out of yourself.
How do we know that returned to the course at the point he wandered off? Obviously there wasn't anyone there watching.
DQ

Blowing up is different than going off course. JW may have already run more than 100 miles.
We know because he has to reach the next aid station on his own. If received help he would still be in first.

How will we know if you've returned to your spot under the bridge without assistance?
I'll never run a 100 mile race but when I do I'll scope out the last 10 miles just so I don't get lost at mile 90 with a 1 hour lead on second place
3rd place is 44 yrs old
