5th or 6th at worst in the 10,000m...but I'd say unlikely to medal.
Odds are he is unlikely to medal in the marathon as well, but the being a total wildcard makes it more intriguing to me. I think the Olympic marathon is the most unpredictable race in the world. So, if I knew that I probably wasn't going to medal in the 10,000m, why not take a chance on the total wildcard race and see what happens?
My guess is he walks away from Rio without a medal, but I like the idea of taking a chance in an unpredictable race where anything can happen.
Rupp has never had a good kick in a 5k. Why would you expect him to have one while he is trying to train for the marathon?
And why would you want Rupp to be going all and risk injury days away from the US trials just to win a low key tune up meet?
My only problem with Rupp is that I do not understand why he is trying to double. He looked very strong in his marathon debut. He has not looked like a 26:4X 10k runner in a while. The Olympic marathon may be tactical, but not so much that being in shape for a good 10k will make a difference.

If I was rupp I wouldn't even do the 5k or worry about it. And the reason I say his 10k strength may help in the marathon is because the last 5-10k of the marathon won't be as straining on him necessarily, plus he also can turn it up more than other guys if he's feeling good; and because the Olympic marathon is tactical this would work well in this I think. I don't think he can beat Kipchoge if he wants to push the pace or even wait till later, but I can see him getting a medal if the race is near 2:08-2:10 winning time.

Really? How do you then explain Radcliffe's 5000 m PR at age 30, which came after her 2:15 marathon world record?

Dirtiest cheat ever.

You certainly aren't making a point for drugs. If Radcliffe was doped to the gills (and perhaps she was but your argumetns aren't helping make that case) I'd think she's have run under 14:00. 2:15 is WAY WAY better than 14:29.
Yeah obviously she was doped to the gills for the marathon.
HONESTLY IT SEEMED LIKE RUPP JUST GAVE UP OVER THE LAST ~20M OR SO AFTER REALIZING THAT HE WAS BEATEN. KINCAID "BEAT" RUPP IN SO FAR AS RUPP MENTALLY QUIT. PHYSICALLY, RUPP IS PROBABLY IN SUPERIOR 5000 SHAPE IF THE RACE HAD BEEN "FAST" FROM THE GUN.
RUPP MORE THAN LIKELY IN 27;10 SHAPE OR SO BY MY GUESS. HE DID, AFTER ALL, RUN 13;20 CLOSING IN 55. THAT IS FAR BETTER THAN LAST NIGHT AND PRESUMABLY HE WAS TRAINING THROUGH WHATEVER EFFORT HE JUST PUT ON.
WATCH RUPP OBLITERATE THE TRIALS 10,000M AND COME BACK AND FINISH 3RD IN THE 5000M BUT GIVE UP HIS SPOT BECAUSE HE IS A GOOD GUY.
Good comments, Rojo, but I learned long ago not to read too much into any one race leading up to the Olympic Trials. I am a believer that a fast 10K and a fast marathon can go well together.... a fast 5K... maybe not so much. The speed that the marathon is now being run... PED or no PED....requires the leg speed of a low 27 minute 10K on the track. Especially in an international race like the Olympics. My own experience tells me that once you "cross the line" and start to train for and race a marathon... it inextricably does have a negative effect on your fast track biomechanical form... which probably hurts your 1500/3K/5K more than the 10K. Some can get it back... other's can't. The trouble is that Galen is qualified for the Olympic Marathon and has to also train for that race right now.... which will have a negative effect on his 3K/5K results, understandably. Frankly, I was surprised that he was able to open up with a 13:20 a couple weekends ago after a long time away from racing following his OT Marathon and USA Indoor Champs 3000 "double."
The 5K/10K double is a different animal than the 10K/marathon double. I still really wish that Galen had waiting to debut in the marathon until after 2016 or at least after the Olympic Games and done the Olympic 5K/10K double one more time while he was still young enough...and fast enough... to do it...and have a shot to medal in both. But, I'm sure that he and Alberto had a long discussion about this decision and have their valid reasons.
Finally, I really wish that USADA would come out with some report before the Trials... and either indict Salazar/Rupp/NOP from their 1 year+ investigation OR... clear their name....so that the cloud of suspicion doesn't continue to hang over them... hurting them unfairly! Surely, by now w/ all those interviews..they have a pretty good idea of what truly was happening. It was nice to see the PED arrests in Spain earlier.... and don't know if the two cases have really any remote connection.... but the other athletes need to know whether there really is a fair and level playing field... or not.....but also that Alberto and Galen (and other NOPer's) aren't dragged through the mud much longer if they truly are innocent. It would be nice to get an official ruling before the OT 10K one week from tonight. I believe that both justice and fairness need to be served here.

The 10k / marathon double is a very good one to do.

How did they do?
It cracks me up that so many are drawing conclusions from a meaningless 5k 2 weeks before the trials.
I would think he would be finishing up his last hard training block before the trials so who knows how tired he was before the race.
He has never shown up not ready for the Trials /US champ I'm not expecting that to change.
I think it would be interesting if he ran the 10k harder than needed at the trials then came back to the 5k and ran it hard to see how his legs feel after a hard 10k effort. It would be fun if he blasted the 5k in the finals just to push it not worrying about qualifying and made everyone else run low 13 to qualify :)
This seems pretty similar to when he lost at Oxy in the 5k in a kick and came back a couple weeks later and set an AR for the 10k.

The 10k / marathon double is a very good one to do.
No it isn't. There are way too many runners out there now who are making the marathon their career. Even Kipchoge has cut his ties with track racing in order to win marathons. I could understand Rupp keeping options open in case the marathon training does not go well, but a 10k/marathon double for Rupp will be very much inferior to Rupp focusing on one or the other.

As others said he closed faster the other week without hardly trying off a faster pace. He obviously wasn't running this race for time and just as a workout.
You Rupp blinder googles are on too tight. They have cut off the circulation to your brain.
Rupp kicked in an attempt to win. Didn't work. Not good. Got it.
Nope. Everything I said was 100% true. That day Knight out kicked him, but you have to be an idiot to think Rupp went into that race for any purpose other than a hard training run with a kick at the end.
If you watched the rece you would also know he let the second guy pass him when he intentionally let up the last 10 meters. You're the one who would have to have blinders on.
This race isn't an indication of great fitness or bad fitness, just preparation.

Nothing can be done about the length of time it takes to complete an investigation. Realize that just a few months ago the retests from the 2008 Olympics indicated drug use where past tests failed to find any wrong doing. What is ugly about the 2008 retests is that only a few samples were retested--only athletes who were trying to make the 2016 team. Retired athletes were not retested so there will always be a suspicion of doubt because of the way the testing process work, and the ever revised rules change keep moving the target.

I was thinking the same thing. (Maybe he is in the same training mode as Rupp.)
Question -- is this Brian Shrader's best race since he turned pro after he won the U.S. Road Championship in 2014?
Question 2 -- does Shrader still train with Estrada?
1. Rupp was done when he had kids. Now he's slowly morphing into hobby jogger status.
2. Jenkins is proof that the college system with more races under you a superior system. People need to RACE more.
Rupp is DONE
Would just like to clarify, as the OP, I knew who Kincaid was...

perfect? it's 90 effing degrees, dude. no rain- the trails are clouds of dust. dropping down to the valley for track workouts cranks it up about 5-7 degrees. if you think this is perfect, then it's only going to get better for you. now, tomorrow, that will be perfect 78/48.
