As for winning OT, USATF trials are an international joke in the 1500. People are talking about guys going top three who don't even have the Oly standard.
Part of the reason their may be a finisher in the top 3 in the 1500 at the trials that doesn't have the Olympic standard is that the Olympic 1500 standard doesn't line up with the Olympic standard in the other events. The 1500 standard is much harder.
According to the IAAF tables a 3:36.20 is equivalent to:
800 in 145.4 (trials standard 1:46.00)
Steeple in 8:21.0 (trials standard 8:30.0)
5000 in 13:14.0 (trials standard 13:25)
10,000 in 27:42 (trials standard 28:00)
So the 1500 guys are up against it. They have a tougher standard. SIGNIFICANTLY tougher than the steeple, 5000 and 10,000.
The tables are outdated. The Oly qualifying time reflects current reality, which is that 3:36 is nothing by global standards in 2016.
