Great question, but let me throw a spin would you rather be the hunter for an hour but if you don't find them you die? Or the hidder for the hour?

The hunter because I'll be smart enough to have an infrared scope.

Will this game take place before or after a ban on ghost guns with the shoulder thingies that go up and high capacity banana clips? Infrared should be banned too because no one needs an infrared scope for anything. Ever.
What kind of gun, what kind of sights/scope, how much ammo?
I would just tell the assassin I'll split the money with him if he doesn't kill me. Then we just chill for an hour, maybe grab a beer afterwards.

^^This is the correct answer.

Stupid game theory answer 😑

Decent idea. But once he lets his guard down, you should kill the assassin and take the whole million for yourself.
No, this is a dumb bet. A quarter mile square is about the size of the athletic fields behind the high school, maybe a little bigger. This slight amount of woods isn't going to stop a determined killer from finding you in such a small amount of space. Since its dark, the killer is going to have to get pretty close, but he's going to be able to do that within an hour, I guarantee it. Remember since he has a gun, if you take off running to avoid getting shot, he's going to get you. I might be willing to try with an unarmed killer. This is all assuming that the rules of the contest only allow you to hide and flee, not defeat the killer.
I would. I can vanish for an hour and no one will find me.
One million doesn't go as far as it used to...

Agreed. In Seattle, that might be able to buy you a decent house, but not enough to retire on and travel the world. I have a higher probability of making $1M in the next 5 years than surviving the shooter in a box scenario. I wouldn't consider it for less than $5M.
I would hide in my RV

After taxes you're looking at a half mil. Not worth considering. I don't think there's a number big enough to get me to give it a go. If your finances are under control why risk your life for more?
Do they have any bullets? If so how many?
How close are you together at the start?
How many other people are in the box? Any animals?
Are you allowed to make weapons or shields?
Are you allowed to dig a hole?
Do I get a head start? Sounds like the ultimate game of hide and seek. Would have made a good Arnold movie back in the day.
For a measly million dollars? No way.
All you have to do is put 15% into a diversified...ah, just kidding.
But, to answer the question, no freaking way.

Would you hide in a box that is a quarter mile on each side, slightly wooded, and dark for a million dollars if someone was trying to find you and kill you? You have to hide for an hour unarmed and they have a gun and are trying to kill you. If you make it an hour hidden you get a million dollars.
We need to know what the hunter is equipped with - night vision, heat finding, a dog, etc., - and we need to know how dark it is. Are we talking dark but there are street lights along the perimeter - or are we talking middle of a cornfield dark both in the area and in the area surrounding?
If it's dark enough, a person who isn't easily excited could just lay down and not move for an hour. The hunter could walk within feet of the hunted and never know they were there.
In that scenario - I would do it.
It is in a dark cornfield however there is a half moon shining with 0 clouds in the sky. You are not armed in this situation and are not allowed to fight back. You have 30 min to hide before the hunter is sent into the area. You are not allowed to bring anything in with you but you are allowed to dress yourself. We will now up the prize money to 10 million dollars? Do most people still say no?
well this changes everything......
