Maybe, maybe not. I think Murphy will be America's Kiprop. Very fast 800 similar to Brazier, but also a very fast 1500. Something that Brazier can't ever hope for. Brazier might not even be able to beat 15 year old J. Ingebrigsten in the 1500.

I dont know guys... lets put some thought into this. You gotta factor in that almost everybody in the final PR'ed by a good margin. So obviously it was fast and that always bodes well for Murphy.
Murphy ran 1:46 low indoors and 1:46 outdoors. Very close to Braziers PR beforehand, do I think Murphy could go 1:44? Absolutely. Do I think he could have beat Brazier? Depends on how the race played out with him in there.
Except for Brazier, who else "PR'ed by a good margin"?
Think about it this way, at the NCAA Champs, athletes run the event they are best at. Murphy choose to run the 1500m, he won and ran a very good NCAA time. Brazier choose to run the 800m, he won and ran a very good world class time. Murphy's time ranks him 31st on the world list, Brazier's time ranks him 3rd on the world list.
Once again, Brazier ran a time trial...the fastest he can go.
Murphy did not.
What you can compare is that they both won in a class field, and you can also compare the margin of victory...Murphy's was pretty substantial...
Woulda coulda shoulda...
Very few men in the WORLD right now could have beaten Brazier in that race.
Murphy, is not one of them.
A far more sensible question is:
Would Berian/Aman/Amos/Tuka/Souleiman/Makhloufi/Kszczot even Rudisha have won the NCAA champs?
I'm serious. Do some thinking before you get back to me.

Exactly.. You can't compare on a world level these performances. Murphy clearly just sat and kicked.. You think he would have held off in 4th pace if he didn't think he could easily fly by them.. Which he did.

Not everyone runs their best event. Sally Kipyego ran the mile her last indoor season and was beaten by Sarah Bowman but she had A LOT of NCAA titles to her name. This year Yorks ran the 3k and not the mile so he could be fresh for the DMR.
Clayton has 2 NCAA 800 titles, the PanAm 800 title, and was on the US team for 800m. What does a third 800m title do for him? Winning the 1500 makes him more valuable considering he was less than a week from turning pro.
No
Harris and McBride?
Very good point!I think he's a little more intelligent than we all think he is.

Murphy's 21 years old.
Asbel Kiprop is 26. He won world junior cross country, Olympic title at 19, and at 26 has 3 world 1500m titles, is all time third fastest over the distance, and has been under 3:30 five years in a row. He is 26.
No pressure Clayton.

Knowing him...you're right. He IS smarter than most of these morons realize.
Tracks are a lot faster now than they used to be!!!

Only 3 of the 8 competitors PRed. Pace was too fast.
No. Don't be ridiculous.
I don't understand how people are saying Murphy's 3:36 isn't impressive. Obviously purely based on time alone it is nowhere near a 1:43.5, but did anyone saying that even watch the race? He beat second and third by 2 seconds after being at their hips with 100m to go. Brazier literally had perfect pacing to run that time. While Murphy's race went out well, the middle laps were a little inconsistent. Also Clayton smoked Boris at Drake. The same Boris that is the reigning indoor WORLD champion and ran a 1:44.2 two weeks after Murphy handily beat him at Drake. Clayton and Brazier have pretty comparable 400 split PR's but Murphy has gone sub 31 on grass. There is a 100% chance that if these two race at OT's Murphy will beat Brazier. Hell Murphy has been doing 1500m training apparently and still managed to be the reigning indoor WORLD champion.
