The problem with the theory is that it is very much contrary to the facts. The highest divorce rates are among those who marry very young. The majority of those couples have children very early and the wife stays home because of limited career prospects. Divorce rates drop off significantly when people marry later in life and both husband and wife are professionals. If anything, a lack of equity leads men to believe that women are just playthings that can be discarded for a newer model when age and child rearing take their toll on the old model.

By far, most divorces are initiated by women.

The problem with your counter theory is divorce rates hit a minimum for couples who get married around 28 and go back up in your 30's. Two highly independent people getting married in their late 30's = just as bad as age 20.

It's been mentioned on here before, but r/K selection theory backs this up pretty substantially.

Biologically, men seek women who have the most fertility, and women seek men who can provide resources.

Historically, women took care of children so the most attractive man is the one who can provide the most.

Men who were providers can their pick of the females and picked the most fertile to perpetuate their genetics.

The Alpha in the office has more resources than the Beta at home.

The 22-year old blonde down the street is more fertile than your 40ish wife.

This is basic biology.

There is that, but I would guess that many who marry in their thirties are also the ones who married in their early 20s, but divorced and learned nothing from the first unsuccessful run at marriage.

There are many factors at play. But, women who don't get married by 30's often develop rabid feminist attitudes that are incompatible with long-term relationships.
