No.
That's because Ovett hadn't run a serious 800 time at that fitness.

Loxsom is 175 lbs. hes far from a stick and id go as far as to say hes the biggest half miler in pro running right now!
also murphy is far from big! team usa.org has him listed at 5'9'', 150lbs. he isnt a shrimp but compare that to 162 symmonds or 165 Berian.
Loxsom is NOT a true pro.
You don't consider 1:45 and European U20 champion a serious effort? That's rich.

Haha only distance runners use hand timed relay splits for their sprint PBs.
Reminds me of Nick Willis' hand timed, rolling start '11.11' 100m 'PB'.
The problem is you guys think 45.4 is fast.. that's 2.3" off the world record!! Ashton Eaton runs 45.00 and he is a Decathlete!!
I love the point of "TrackCoach" trying to compare himself to a Pan Am Games Champion and future Olympian!! Haha...

45.4 is fast. If that was a FAT flat 400m time it would be impossibly fast for a 3:40 1500m guy.
45 is the kind of speed Coe, Amos and Rudisha have. We are talking about middle distance running here, remember?
45.95 FAT split last year according to the East Regional results.
Indoor MAC this year he was more like 45.8 hand time split from line to line. He got the baton about 4 meters in front of the MAC Champion in the open 400, Tyler Brown of Eastern Michigan, and Brown never had a chance.

For a miler it is "damn fast."
If you don't think 58's would feel easy for a 45-46 guy than you are not thinking clearly. Early pacing in the 1500 will feel like a jog. He should have quite a kick if he is as strong as indicated. Yorks, Wynne, Engells, and others will have about a 300 meter window two-thirds of the way through a 1500 to drop this guy.

Well again a relay split is not a great indicator of what he could run for a flat 400m. A kid this year in the BUCS champs split 45 high in the relay and his best flat 400m was 46.8.
Thanks for the info though.

I think the general consensus is that there is about a 0.7 sec difference between a relay split and an open 400m.
So a 45.4, if that is what he ran, is worth about 46.1, still incredibly fast for an 8/15 guy. Of course if it's hand timed then it's likely to be a tenth of 2 slower.

No, the general consensus is that there is about a 0.7 sec difference between a relay split and an open 400m FOR A 400M RUNNER. A mid distance runner who has less training out of the blocks and most likely less explosiveness would be a bit more than that 0.7 second difference.

That last sentence is not accurate. The majority of the hand time to FAT fudge factor is due to the fact that in an open race the time starts nearly simultaneously with the gun, whereas our human reaction can't do that. However, in a relay, we don't have to rely on waiting for a gun to start the time, but rather we can anticipate when someone crosses the line both times as long as they are running a leg in the middle of the relay.
There is no doubt still some error involved, but it's not like we are clicking our watches two tenths of a second after they cross the corresponding line in their exchange zone...well, some might be but that's a different story.

Eh I think he could hit 1:44 mid or even low but I don't see him under 1:44 yet. For the 1500 he's definitely dangerous but I can't see him beating Yorks. I say top 3 over 1500 but I think Yorks has enough strength that Murphy wouldn't be close enough to kick him down, along with more experience in the event. But if it's super slow Murphy could surprise people.
If he split 45.4 off of 800/1500 training, why doesn't he focus on the 400/800 and drop the 1500? Sounds to me like if trained for the 400m, he could probably be competitive at the NCAA meet because that's not far off what some of the best ncaa 400m sprinters are running. Better yet, focus on just the 800, with his mile strength and 45x 400m speed, he should be capable of 1:43 in the 800.
That's what most guys with that speed would do, but he obviously is taking a "more options" approach. Can't wait to see how Yorks v. Murphy plays out.

Also, with the OT's in July, he may be doing the 1500 to keep up his stength/endurance before focusing on his specialty for when it really counts.
I don't believe he split 45.4 or that his hs 11.84 pr is nearly as fast as his current level, but I do think that he has a shot at breaking 1:44 this year, because he beat Berian at Drake and he was already a world semifinalist last year, coming from out of nowhere that season. His speed, even if it is more like 46.1 for an open 400m, is outstanding for an 800m/1500m guy. Yorks will be in trouble in the 1500m if the pace isn't very fast. And there should be other excellent kickers in the field, including the guys from UVA and Oklahoma State.
According to Flotrack looks like we are going to get our Murphy v Centro showdown after all at Portland on Sunday
If he takes down Centro that will be an epic turn. Berian was big enough as it was...this would be HUGE.

25.6 last 200 in the semis. World-class speed for an 800 guy. 45-relay splits were for real.
boris berian ran 11.32 in high school, quite a bit faster than murphy. i bet they're quite a bit closer now. murphy is definitely the better runner above 800m.
