HS 100m PR of 11.84, despite bad start:
"He might be the only collegiate distance runner in the country whose university bio lists his 100-meter personal best: 11.84, which he ran in high school. When I bring this up to Murphy, he can’t help but muster a chuckle. “That sub-12 100 is kind of embarrassing because of how slow I was out of the blocks,†he wryly admits. “My dad always says that I was probably the ninth guy out of the blocks, and there were only eight guys in the race. Everyone else had a step and a half on me.†"
http://grantland.com/the-triangle/running-man-clayton-murphy-on-junk-food-passports-and-replacing-nick-symmonds-at-the-world-championships/Might be capable of sub-22.
I am confused. - In H.S., I ran much faster in the 100m, but I never came close to splitting 45.4 at no point in my career. Even if we subtract a full tenth for a poor start, there is absolutely no way someone can split 45.4 with 11.74 100m speed. Even 4/8 types capable of running sub-46 in the 400m are usually capable of at least sub-11 in 100m. Even if Clayton was able to run an entire 400m at top speed, which isn't possible, he would only be a 47x 400m sprinter. The math and a bunch of other things call into question this 45.4 split.
How close to 1:45 were you for 800? Therein lies your answer. Also, he can probably run much faster than 11.84 right now. That was a one-off three years ago. How many 11.xx guys can also run well under 4:00 for the mile, 14-low for 5k and 30 minutes for 10K cross?Like I have said over and over, he is following the Steve Ovett template. A very parallel development pattern. 45.4 is a matter of debate, but he clearly is 46 seconds for the open 400. He has Berian/Walker speed coupled with Centro/Torrance strength.

This is really not good analysis.

Loxsom is 175 lbs. hes far from a stick and id go as far as to say hes the biggest half miler in pro running right now!
also murphy is far from big! team usa.org has him listed at 5'9'', 150lbs. he isnt a shrimp but compare that to 162 symmonds or 165 Berian.
Clayton did alot of 400 meter training his SR year in HS. His HS coaches didnt burn him up with alot of miles.

Loxsom is more like 160.
I think Murphy 5'9'' 150lbs is about right, he is skinny dude. Though he is probably taller than 5'9''.
I believe 330 is area code of akron ohio.
There are only 2 possible results in the NCAA 1500, and they depend completely on Blake Nelson from Washington. If he (and I bet he does) rabbits for Yorks, it is over unless Murphy is going to run a 3+ second PR. If Yorks is left alone to front run and doesn't drop Murphy, I see no way Murphy doesn't go right by him at the end. Go Izaic!

He has run 14:11 at Raliegh Relays last year (2 weeks or so after running 800 at indoor nationals). He is two time xc all region in the great lakes. 30:30 at 10k?
He also anchored at 1st rounds this passed weekend. Results says he split 46.3 and if he came to a stop or even ran into a runner the should have easy been under 46.0 and split closer to 45.5.
He will win NCAA 1500
If he actually ran a 45.4 400 split then he is not similar to Ovett's progression.
By age 21 Ovett hadn't run faster than 47 for an open or relay split. His fastest ever 400 relay was 46.8 in 79, when 23 and a 1:44.0, 3:32 man.
Clayton is about 1.5 sec faster over a lap than Ovett ever was.
It would be good if there was video footage to back up this 45.4.
If it's genuine, even with 3:40 1500 ability, then he should break 1:44.0 easily this summer.
If he gets his 1500 down to below 3:35, then I would expect 1:42 high/ 1:43 flat.
Eh I think he could hit 1:44 mid or even low but I don't see him under 1:44 yet. For the 1500 he's definitely dangerous but I can't see him beating Yorks. I say top 3 over 1500 but I think Yorks has enough strength that Murphy wouldn't be close enough to kick him down, along with more experience in the event. But if it's super slow Murphy could surprise people.

This is why Loxoms best event is the 600.
Loxom sucked at cross country

If he's really rolling, even with 11.5 or so speed a male with great endurance can probably hit 46 for a 400 split fairly easily.
There's a lot of variation at that distance where speed and endurance can cause large changes in performance profiles, so even a slower guy can have a fast 400.
Alot of the best distance runners, who never trained sprints, and would have
trouble lifting their own body weight split well under 50.
Some of the best 400m runners couldn't break 20.5 in a 200, so it seems to reason even a mid-d runner with superior endurance and only 11.50 speed should be able to split 46-46.5.
The poorer the start from blocks, the more helpful the running start.
Murphy is plenty fast once he get's moving.
Yorks, Wynne, and Engells all like fast pace.
