26 minutes per mile is barely a walk. That's the same speed most people keep while traveling down the aisles at the grocery store.

Well why don't you try to walk faster than 26 minutes per mile while inhaling fifteen 72oz milkshakes?
Personal trainer's advice to someone training for a half marathon... get on the Stairmaster???

Is running the only sport where you can write stuff like this? It seems that it's a new trope to write about how bad your running is, or how one shouldn't run (see Slate today).
Would anyone find humor in someone writing about how they didn't try to learn, or care to properly prepare for mountain climbing, or golfing, or even fishing??
Just seems like a weird take.
It probably is the only sport where you can write stuff like this, or brag about it on Facebook and have people applaud you. No one ever writes a "I bowled nothing but gutter balls at a bowling tournament" story, or "I entered a golf tournament and couldn't even hit the ball off the tee." How about writing a story about playing league hockey when you can't even skate?
Kind of crazy that she seems a legit journalist, but I have so many more questions after reading the piece. Like, did she run at all for it beforehand (as opposed to the stairmaster) and why did it take so long to walk it? Was it supposed to be a special weekend if one woman flew in from Atlanta?
She says she could've sulked about what could've been, but sulking isn't the right word here. Sulking is when you think the result is due to unfair circumstances, like being pulled off the course or bad weather. She owns up to her lack of prep, but her word choices are suspect. I'm pretty sure her friend didn't "shoot" by them if they were all together for 4 miles at a 25-minute pace.
And hosting a dinner party and eating pasta and cake doesn't sound too bad for the night before a 10k. I think that sounds good.

Will this prompt Dahleen to spend more time on the stair master?

At least she did the entire distance unlike cheater Mike Rossi.
i've hike hiked in the Sierras around 10,000 ft elevation with a 35-40lb backpack at a faster pace than that for 12 miles with 2,500' of elevation gain.WOWtake her out to the pasture and ...you know......pull it

Did I read that correctly? 6 miles in 2:36? (2 minute per mile pace)
Also the article is horribly written

Aren't you special with your "hike hiking". What else have you done with your life? She's in her sixties. Not as fit as you, but perhaps has other priorities in life. Maybe her body wasn't feeling up to it during the race but she persevered and finished it.And it's not like she was celebrating her result. Did you even read the article?By the way, 12 miles with 2,500' feet of gain is a pretty lame brag, even with your (unnecessarily heavy) 40 lb. backpack.
that's remarkable wrote:

I thought the LRC community already determined it was scientifically impossible to run on pure hate AND look relaxed at the same time?

I can't speak on looking relaxed. But I know that it's impossible to run any event other than 800 on pure hate, soooo....

The perseverance required to gut it out at 2.3 mph for six miles, shouldn't be underestimated.

In running, the slowest suffers for the longest duration of time. For some people, it is more admirable to suffer for 2 1/2 hours than suffering for one hour. If you score zero on bowling, you don't expend more energy than someone who scored 300.
Now it is also true that a bad golfer ends up spending more time (it takes longer time to hit 120 than 70), and probably has to walk more (in and out of the bunkers, up and down the hills off the fairway). But most people think of playing golf as fun.
Most people don't think of running as fun. Well, in this case, the "jogger" was slower than casual walking of an average person (which is about 2.5mph). I don't know how many people consider that as fun.
Non-speedwalking walkers should limit themselves to races of 5K or less.
