She's not looking like a medal contender at 1500m. Not her fault, the world's just gotten better. The steeple is improving fast, too, but I feel like she'd still have a better shot there. I know this idea's been floated before, but after today, I'm finally convinced that this is the right move.
Discus.
Why doesn't Jenny Simpson go back to the steeple?

Because she's better at 1500m. You lot were saying the same thing before she won the WC

Maybe so, but her "better" is not good enough anymore. The women's 1500m is a different world than it was 5 years ago. Basically, to even get a medal, she has to be the best in the world besides two of the best ever in Kipyegon and Dibaba. You could put Hassan in that category, too. Jenny's great, but she's not on that level.
She ran 9:12 years ago and one expects she would still have the American record by several seconds had she kept running the steeple. It's getting stronger but still a clearly weaker event. Emma Coburn has been called a medal contender; surely Jenny would be as well. -

This board is filled with annoying trolls like finisher medal and 400mbreh talking about doing anal with each other, and the harmless tradition of "discus" is what you're upset about? Honestly, the stupid traditions/ongoing jokes are the only things that give this place any sense of community and make it bearable. -
All events are not created equal. The 1500 is much more glamorous than the steeple and likely pays better. From the attention standpoint, Coburn is one of the top American steeplers and the same for Simpson at 1500m but Simpson gets much more attention because of the event she's in. It's better to be 8th best 1500m runner in the world than 3rd best steepler. This is why Bolt runs the 100 although he's said numerous times he prefers the 200: the 100 is the more glamorous (and lucrative) event.

because doping Africans would pwn her by 10 seconds.
Face it until the Africans are tested, Americans will never win another medal in any distance event. 800, 1500, steeple, 5k, 10k, marathon. -

who? -
Seems like a pretty simple reason to me
More money could be made at 1500 than steeple -
She will medal, a few years after the Olympics when the dopers get caught.
-
I've seen this argument several times since rowberry got the American record. But really rowberry isn't any more competitive than Simpson but no one is saying rowberry should switch events. Is it because the 1500 is her only event or do you think really think she has that much better of a chance to medal?

they will not get caught either because
1) they don't dope
2) they are protected by IAAF -

The difference with Rowberry is that I don't think that she could be more competitive at another event-nobody thinks she could. I do believe that Jenny has a better chance to medal in the steeple, if only because her chances at 1500 are near zero, or just a bit better if Dibaba isn't there for whatever reason.
As for the more money in 1500 argument, that may be the case, I don't know. If she was an east African, I could see that as the main motivating factor, but it seems to me that well-off westerners are less likely to be swayed by that. -

Possibly. Steeple can also break you down a lot more so physically she can't do it.
In the end she is a medal (she will be one of the ones fighting it out for bronze ) threat at the 1500m. Stuff can happen and she could win. In the steeple she would probably in the group of 3-4 that you would consider medal favorites and the favorites wouldn't be anywhere near as prohibitive. But it is hard to step in and run a race you haven't for down for 5 years. You could make arguements that Rowbury should be running the 5k. I doubt either will happen. You run your event and hope your best is good enough on that day. -
It's just business. Simpson has said herself she would not go back to the steeple unless she thought she could break the world record (WR bonus). Better professionally to be a top 10 1500 runner than top 10 steepler. Simpson likely gets much more money in her New Balance contract than Coburn even though they're comparably good at their events.
-
She stopped the steeple because of her hip. It gets injured easily. That's straight from the athlete. She will not be going back to the steeple ever.

Comparably good?
I realize that Coburn has an AR and Simpson does not, but Simpson is 2011 and 2013 World Champion. ( Excluding Aregawi, the doper) -

Not comparing CAREERS, just where they are at this point in time since people are talking about Simpson moving to the steeple because of last year. (Simpson is 4 years older so comparing careers isn't really apples to apples.)
Coburn finished 5h in last year's World Championships. Simpson finished 11th. Coburn top American in her event last year, Simpson 2nd. Simpson ranked 6th in the world in her event. Coburn ranked 7th. So off the last complete season both are top 10 in the world in their events, pretty comparable RIGHT NOW I think. -

Silly comparison. Rowbury didn't hold the AR in an event and then abandon it.
