When Webb accomplished 3:53, he was back of that pack at:
0:58.1
1:57.8
2:58.4
If Hunter goes out at 1:55 he'll be toast.

But the opposite is the case.
You should be coaching Hunter shouldn't you? not Tinman.

I'd have Hunter down to 3:43 in no time at all.
Yeah I think any talk of breaking it purely disrespects the greatness of the record. 356 at best for The cocky DH
Tinman hasn't been too far off w/his predictions thus far, but I don't see the point in saying Hunter could be "well under" the record w/2:57 for the first three laps. I know the goal is 3:54 for the Oly qualifier, but anything sub-3:55 would be fantastic. Even a 3:55.
If Hunter came through in 2:59 or 3:00, I wonder how fast he could close?

Wow. I am expecting great things. I bet Hunter will CRUSH the record in 3:51.8
I'll take that bet.
I would put the odds of him taking Alan Webb's record down at one in ten,
Most importantly, if Hunter takes down Webb's record, will "Webb is back baby" and "but, was he relaxed" go away? If they do, Hunter better give us a 12.5s 100m in the middle of a 1500m a la Webb.
I agree that "well under" means 3:52.0 for a low-end and 3:51.0 as a high-end.
Remember back in the winter when Tom said Hunter was sick during both of his indoor sub-4 miles? I can't help but think that he could have run 3:55-3:56 indoors during that 3:57 race had he not been sick.
That said, I said it back then and I'll say it again -
If Hunter runs 3:51 or even as "slow" as 3:55 - why is he going to run in college? If the system works then why not get a degree and have Tom continue to coach him to the top? There really isn't anyone for him to race on the college scene if he is truly capable of 3:51-3:55 as an 18-year old. He will be bored stiff by the time he is 22 years old.

Wow, great attitude. You must be fun at parties...
Wait....is that you jamin??
3:55 maybe, 3:53, almost no way. Because of all of the hype, I can see him running an incredible 3:57 PR and seeing it as a let down. A lot will depend on how the race plays out; hopefully it is not a 3:49 type race.
At first I thought that too, but everything we have seen so far from Hunter indicates that he is capable of more.
One more thing I was thinking of is simply how conservative Tinman is as a coach. Read any of his posts - he is very reserved and 100% conservative in his approaches. If Tom is saying Drew can do it, I'd say it will likely be done.

I agree a lot will depend on how the race turns out. I also think it is interesting they are planning to key off Blankenship - if the race is quick, I would not be at all shocked to see Blankenship running 3:49. Maybe that is the key to Hunter running sub-3:53 ...
I can't say for sure how Ben's fitness will translate to the track, but I know at the road mile championships he CRUSHED a bunch of guys who are likely in 3:55-3:57 shape.
Has any official reason been given as to why Slagowski is not in the Pre Mile with Hunter?

Here's what I'd love to see in all this - Is for Slagowski to run faster that Drew by himself - in the "B' race. The 'B race' WTF is that?!?! When is the last time you had two Sub 4 High Schoolers in the same damn race ? Ever? Danielson & Liquori back in 1967? The promoters just want 'hype' not 'true' competition! This is a slap in the face to Slagowski. I hope he responds by proving them all wrong without their "tug-me-along-rabbits". If you were to reverse the scenario, for sure Slag will preform around 3:55 in the 'Pro' race! Hunter I'm not so sure? What his Sub 4 times do prove, is that he's codependent on faster, much older, other level "pacers". This is not a test of his true mental character as a runner (the mind of a champion) but of his "latch-on-ability". I can think of at least 10 other guys in the last 10 years in HS who would have easily gone sub 4 having been put in "Pro" races. So Slag goes Sub 4 completely on his own and he gets the F'ing "B race" - F' off! They want to see what these guys truly got??? Put them both in there together in the same damn race or neither one at all - it simply isn't equitable!
