You guys mentioned rock bands but if you include other genres then you must include
1. Rascal Flatts
2. The Black Eyed Peas
3. Spinal Tap - c'mon they even made a movie about them
4. Bon Jovi
5. Def Leppard

1: The Beatles: I really enjoy them, but they're definitely not as amazing or revolutionary as many claim.
2: Neutral Milk Hotel: Not even close to the best E6 band. A lot of music sites are in love with them though.
3: AC/DC: Not very interesting in my opinion
4: Journey: See above
5: Captain Beefheart: Another weird obsession of some, I've heard many people claim Trout Mask Replica is the greatest album of all time. (I enjoy that album, but definitely overrated)
Captain Beefheart's "Clear Spot" might be the great album of all-time.
By the standards of those on this thread, any band that has achieved mainstream success. The romantic ideal for all you music dweebs is to champion a band that few of us have ever listened to on a regular basis. Give us your best 5 bands along with your worst 5. It will be instructive.

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd
2. The Eagles
3. Guns n Roses
4. Run-DMC
5. Cream
Cream?! GTFO
Well's... reading comprehension needs some serious improvement.

I could never get emotionally invested in Captain Beefheart enough to put any of their music in contention for 'greatest ever'. Still good, but In my opinion rating any of their albums that highly is a bit much (thus the mention)

You assert that The Beatles were not revolutionary? Holy crap? May I ask how old you are?
The Replacements are the one band that can be considered the most overrated band of all time and also the most underrated band of all time.
The Smiths were great but highly overrated in my opinion
I never got the acclaim The Strokes had. I tried to get it but didn't.
Its a topic that people define differently regarding to their taste in music.
I can't get why anyone loves The Greatfull Dead. Their music bores me and irritates me at the same time.
The Rolling Stones still to me are the definition of the greatest rock band of all time. At their peak they put out "Aftermath, Let it Bleed, Beggar's Banquet, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main Street". The Who challenged them for a while as the biggest rock concert act but never matched them as a band that made great albums and dominating tours.
Anyone that thinks the Stones are an overrated band needs to do some research. Start with "Live in Texas 1972".
Yeah, what George said about the Stones. That arc of albums he describes if pretty hard to top. Don't judge them by what they're doing as 70-year-olds.

In general The Beatles were stylistically very similar to the Beach Boys, just lagging behind by a year or two. Paul McCartney cited Brian Wilson as his biggest influence and many of The Beatle's chroniclers describe how elements of the Beach Boy's music would be quickly adapted into new ideas for The Beatles.
The Beatles did a lot of cool things with audio tape manipulation and non-standard instruments, but years after Frank Zappa and others were doing the same. They also cite Frank Zappa, Dylan, etc, as a major inspirations.
Their later work introduces psychedelic elements, but this came at the end of psychedelia's biggest popularity.
They also didn't have the same influence on the new musical styles as many of their contemporaries. Zappa, Beefheart, and the velvet underground all had more influence on Avante Garde. The only Beatles album that was heavily inspirational to Prog was Sgt Peppers, which came years after Pet Sounds and much of Zappa's most influential work. Even bands like King Crimson are often said to have done more for Prog than the Beatles.
The Beatles were great because they did good things with what their contemporaries did slightly before them. In many ways they're more polished and potentially better, but not more revolutionary. People's claim that they are is why I think they're overrated.
For your 2nd question, I'm 23. 10 years ago I was one of those millennial teens that obsessed over the Beatles. At the time they were my 2nd favorite band. I still respect them and think they're good, but maybe I'm not 'in love' with them simply because people tend to 'grow up' from what they listened to as kids, even if that was good music. Now I'm just one of those 'music dweebs' as some other poster called us that listens to way too much weird jazz and avant-garde for my own good.

Totally agree. Now we only need three more to make a five list.
I'll add Green Day,
1. 3 Dog Night
2. The Guess Who
3. Hootie and the Blowfish
4. Rush
5. ZZ Top
How did we get through Page 1 with no Green Day.
Mine in no particular order
1. Green Day
2. Van Halen
3. The Clash
4. Coldplay
5. Nirvana
When I was a kid (it was a long time ago), parents supposedly said that all of the music their kids listened to sounded the same. I don't know that they ever actually said that, but if they said it about Green Day, they would have been correct,

The key word is "overrated."
Many people consider the Beatles the greatest band of all time. I would say that is overrating them. Do you (Hmmm....) consider them the greatest band of all time?
So tell us, who in your mind meets the definition of greatest band of all time?
In no particular order:
1. Van Halen- nothing special.
2. Greatful Dead- Phish
3. Marilyn Manson - Alice Cooper wannabe
4. Bruce Springsteen
5. Madonna- horrible
1. Bruce
2. The dead
3. Dave Mathew
4. Stone temple pilots
5. Guns N roses
My friends and I were at a Dead concert when we ran out of weed. After coming down from our high we realized how bad the music was and went home.
I'd also include Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers(Rock N Roll HOF-really?), Dave Matthews, and Prince. I live in MN and you'd think George Washington just died the way the news outlets go on about him
