He looked so in control. What is so scary about Clinger is his competitive drive when someone is running shoulder to shoulder with him. That is when he becomes so dangerous. Man I hope all three AF guys stay healthy all year!

C. Clinger destroyed his Utah 5k XC record by 10 seconds yesterday. He is well ahead of last year. American Fork top 3 ....I have never seen the like, of these three, in the USA in High School distance history.
What about the famed Hammond, IN trio of the '70s, featuring Rudy Chapa? They were once ranked 1, 2, and 4 in the country for high school two-milers.

Amazing group of three. No way I'm gonna argue against those guys. Guess will see this year what the AF three run. Maybe one or two of them won't be running the two mile. Last year, three Juniors, at 4:06 or better, will see what they do their senior year here.
Soph Carson Clinger leads the charge of underclassman
that flush out the team.

The stress must be a bit heavy on Carson and AF 5 and 6 guys! Great team mates and coach. Probably having a time they will always remember.
Wow Davis HS sure has a tight pack (21sec for top 5, 33 sec for the top 7):
3. Davis HS 85
Place Bib Name Time Score Behind Winner Spread
Spread between the scoring runners 00:21.0
12. 205 Matt Ward 15:47.0 11. 01:04.1
15. 203 Camren Todd 15:53.5 14. 01:10.6
20. 202 Seth Stromberg 15:58.6 19. 01:15.7
21. 200 Devin Jaster 16:01.3 20. 01:18.4
22. 204 Jacob Vaughn 16:08.0 21. 01:25.1
26. 199 Brigham Halverson 16:19.5 (25.) 01:36.6
27. 201 Josh Peters 16:19.9 (26.) 01:37.0
In general do the winning teams in HS XC have a couple of top15 finishers and the rest scattered down the places or a lot of runners scoring in the teens to 30s with no real standouts?
Not even the Great Oak trio of just last year? that group was exceptional:
Cortes 1:50/4:02c/9:01 (1:52/4:06 as a junior)
Dodds 1:54/4:05/8:55 (4:09 as a junior)
Spencer 1:54r/4:08/8:51 (4:09/8:59 as a junior)
on top of that they had:
quintana 1:50/4:16
fountain 1:55/4:10 (returning)
They won NXN, got the 4xmile record and at full strength would have put a scare into both the 4x800 and DMR records. I do think that AF's boys will be able to challenge all three marks and contend strongly for NXN as well, let's see what they bring!

#1 Casey Clinger: 8:51.68y, 4:05.96y
#2 McKay Johns: 9:05.52 at altitude (2 years ago, was injured the summer after and wasn't back up to speed prior to this season)
#3 Patrick Parker: 9:04.51 at altitude, 4:06.72y
I would put AF's trio ahead of Great Oak's. No offense to Great Oak's trio. Actually, even last year it was pretty close between AF's trio and GO's trio at NXN:
1. Casey Clinger (AF) 15:03.2
15. Spencer Dodds (GO) 15:26.1
18. Cole Spencer (GO) 15:29.0
27. Isaac Cortes (GO) 15:37.0
31. McKay Johns (AF) 15:40.8
47. Patrick Parker (AF) 15:48.5
If Johns and Parker have improved by about 10 seconds each, that puts AF's #2/3 on par with GO's #2/3, with a #1 that was and still would be way out in front. And it seems pretty clear they have improved more than that much.
Last year, Parker ran 15:37.4 at the Utah State meet (Johns ran 16:09.9, but it was his first race back from his injury). This year, Parker ran 15:00.9 and Johns ran 14:49.7 (beating Clinger's time of 14:52.8 from last year's meet).
I love looking at this thread now. Cross country season is here and American Fork is ranked #1 team in the nation. Casey Clinger is also ranked the #1 individual. They are definitely getting the recognition they deserve. Casey recently won the Utah State Championships too. (Fun fact: My teammate who was in the 4A division ran a faster first mile than Casey. Though, he died so hard after.) Casey is incredibly fast and I hope he wins more national titles. He deserves them.
Are you from Spanish Fork?
I am.
I just recently moved to Sandy, Utah. Really cool to see such a vibrant HS running community. Definitely impressed by the sheer number of HS tracks available and open to the public! Alta's is AMAZING.

Yeah, I thought that was weird when I learned that as well. The university's track seems to really be nice. Was lighted at night in August, which made for some good runs. Met a super nice older dude out there that was just crushing track workouts. Tried to hang, but just too much for me at that moment. Really happy to be living here!
